Cuba lifts ban on home computers.

04:34 GMT, Saturday, 3 May 2008 05:34 UK

The first legalised home computers have gone on sale in Cuba, but a ban remains on internet access.

This is the latest in a series of restrictions on daily life which President Raul Castro has lifted in recent weeks.
Crowds formed at the Carlos III shopping centre in Havana, though most had come just to look.

The desktop computers cost almost $800 (£400), in a country where the average wage is under $20 (£10) a month.
But some Cubans do have access to extra income, much of it from money sent by relatives living abroad.

Since taking over the presidency in February, Raul Castro has ended a ...

Clinton's chief strategist quits

bbc GMT, Monday, 7 April 2008 01:45

The chief strategist for Hillary Clinton's campaign to become the Democratic Party's candidate for the US presidency has resigned.

Mark Penn stepped down after a row over a potential conflict of interest involving his public relations firm.
Mr Penn's company had been employed by the Colombian government to help it pursue a free-trade agreement with the US - a deal Mrs Clinton opposes.

Mrs Clinton is vying with Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.
They have been fighting a close battle in the continuing state primary election campaign.

The latest count of pledged delegates to the party's ...

Fresh clashes break out in Basra

Wednesday, 26 March 2008, 08:58 GMT

There has been fresh fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, as Iraqi security forces battle Shia militants for a second day.

Police and witnesses report heavy clashes in five districts. More than 40 people are said to have died overall.
Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has given militants 72 hours to lay down their arms or face penalties.

His campaign to "re-impose law" in the city triggered fighting elsewhere in Iraq, and many towns are under curfew.
In Baghdad's Sadr City, clashes continued overnight and civilians are feared to be among at least 14 people killed.
Unrest in...

Gold hits $1,000 for first time
Posted: Nico @ Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:18 pm
bbc Thursday, 13 March 2008, 21:36 GMT

The price of gold reached a record, trading at $1,000 an ounce for the first time, pushed higher by a weak US dollar and fears about the US economy.

Concerns about a possible US recession are seeing investors buy up commodities such as gold as an alternative to company shares and the US dollar.

Since the beginning of the year the value of gold has increased by about 20%, after it rose 32% in 2007.
Gold eventually settled for the day at $993.80, up $13.30 an ounce.
Analysts say gold will stay high as long as dollar and growth fears remain.

"Every bit of bad US economic data boosts gold in two...

NY Gov. Spitzer...about to resign?
Posted: Lumina @ Mon Mar 10, 2008 2:33 pm
His press conference is about to begin, and he'll be speaking about whatever his "involvement" is in a prostitution ring.

NY, I'm so sorry. That's my only opinion until there is more hard news.

William F. Buckley Jr. - Dead at 82
Posted: John Galt @ Wed Feb 27, 2008 1:11 pm

NEW YORK (AP) - William F. Buckley Jr., the erudite Ivy Leaguer and conservative herald who showered huge and scornful words on liberalism as he observed, abetted and cheered on the right's post-World War II rise from the fringes to the White House, died Wednesday. He was 82.

His assistant Linda Bridges said Buckley was found dead by his cook at his home in Stamford, Conn. The cause of death was unknown, but he had been ill with emphysema, she said.

Editor, columnist, novelist, debater, TV talk show star of "Firing Line," harpsichordist, trans-oceanic sailor and even a good-natured loser in a New York mayor's race, Buckley worked at...
