Woman, 92, dies in shootout with police

ATLANTA -- A 92-year-old woman was shot to death Tuesday after she fired at three narcotics officers trying to serve a warrant at her house, officials said.

Neighbors and relatives said it must have been a case of mistaken identity. Police said they had the right address.

Police said the woman, identified as Kathryn Johnson, was the only person home at the time, and had lived there for about 17 years.

As the plainclothes Atlanta police officers approached the house about 7 p.m., a woman inside started shooting, striking each of them, said Officer Joe Cobb, a police spokesman.

Assistant Chief Alan Dreher said the officers had a legal warrant and "knocked and announced" before they forced open the door. He said they were justified in returning fire when they were fired upon.

One was hit in the arm, another in a thigh and the third in a shoulder. The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment, and all three were conscious and alert, police said.

Sarah Dozier, identified as a niece of the woman, told WAGA-TV that there were never any drugs at the house.

"My aunt was in good health. I'm sure she panicked when they kicked that door down," Dozier said. "There was no reason they had to go in there and shoot her down like a dog."

What in the hell are 3 narcotics officers doing kicking in the door, of a 92 year old womans home?

If I were in her shoes, I'd shot every last one of them too.

I'm curious to know if she really was involved with anything or not? I guess my instinct would say no, but I suppose you can never know...

You can bet your life I'm going to panick if someone knocks down my door whether it's a cop or a thief.

I simply don't know what I am going to do in that situation, but I know for sure I am going to panick.

What a way to go at the age of 92. Shootout with the cops- that's some major cool points

I will probably die doing something lame.

They had the warrant for the House and the only one HOME was the elderly woman.

Being 92 does not make her inocent...

The article states they KNOCKED and Identified themselves...

It doesn't say they knocked the door down without identifying themselves...and busted in....

To me, this appears to be a the Cops going to the right place, but the wrong person may have been in the home alone.

Cops go in on a warrant, and someone starts shooting at them..Do they know it's a 92 year old woman ? I think not...

Did ya ever think that maybe they thought the person(s) they were looking for were the ones shooting at them ?

Nahh..a 92 year old lady shoots 3 Police officers , they shoot her..and they are on trial.

You do know that hearing loss is pretty much a given in elderly people, don't you?

I'm guessing she didn't understand what they were saying....and thought people were breaking in to hurt her.

Seriously though, she shot 3 cops, and they returned fire. They were in the house on a warrant. Case closed. The law knows no age.

Those 3 cops are never gonna live this down.

I was thinking that. Not only that though, this has to weigh heavily on their psyche. I don't know if I could forgive myself. Even after considering everything, I still think this would scar me for life.

And she actually shot all 3 cops! One in the shoulder, one in the leg and one in the arm... (as per the article) go granny! what a way to go. (if shes innocent ofcourse)

I'm not against gun ownership, but I'm certain if this little old lady didn't have a gun she'd still be alive.

I don't think senile old ladies represent the majority of gun owners, though.

These cops were plain clothes narcs, which means they probably looked like drug dealers.

She'd have probably lived to 95 if only she'd stayed off the drugs

How is it that this 92 year old woman with presumably failing senses, was able to shoot not one, not two, but three cops? What makes it even more interesting is when you see the hundreds of stories about drug dealers and their shootouts with the police where not one cop gets hurt, and this granny gets all 3, wow.
