| K, Communism and Democracy cannot be compared, Comunism is economics while Democracy is form of governments, many Communist states have been democratic, and many Capitalist states have been Authortarian |

China and Japan are without doubt the industrial and economic (and military) contenders for the title.
However would it be possible for the next super power to be an international alliance of idealogical charged groups and states as has been seen in the 'coalition of the willing' or perhaps with the rise of a cohesive collection of fundamentalist islamic groups and states. |

The Japanese are not allowed to have a military over a set size for self defense purposes. These restrictions do not have a problem however when it is applied to developing technologies that do not require active human elements and tech such as missile defense systems. Nonetheless, the size and capabilities of the the Japanese tech divisions can only be guessed at. |
