| I agree with kingcourage. The era of city states is reaching its end. McDonalds, Coca Cola, MTV, and Viacom already rule the world. Sadly nobody seems to notice or care. |

China is considered a third world country, and yet they are in the perfect position to control half the world's population.
China could make non-aggression pact with Russia (much like the one made in 1938 between Russia and Germany), then easily split Asia between them. China could deploy is military to the south and control Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Burma and Cambodia in a matter of months. These countries are influenced incredibly by China and there would be no shortage of spies or sabotage. As this is all occurring Russia would press from the North upon Mongolia and Kazakhstan.
The next and only territory with enough to stop China is obviously India. With their incredible numbers, (almost a million and a half) India could hold their own in a defensive war for a few years, but soon the superior technology of the Chinese would prevail, and Asia will be changed into two dominating powers.
And yet you ask where is the United States during this? We all know that China has the U.S. in its enormous economic pocket. |

I've never thought (or heard of) China as anything near a third world country. They have a massive population, a high economic state, and trade with most of the free world. The only reasons to not consider them a superpower is the fact that they have a weak military history within the last 200 years and that calling them a superpower is all but condoning communism.
PS, long live OSC! Love the name, man. |

nah...China's got some major internal issues to work through before they start playing serious international power politics.....they're running outta water and good land to farm(desertifications a big problem), they need more and more aggie products from us and the aussies. Their finacial markets are pretty back-ward...really need to reform them. They have over-employment bigtime(too many cooks in the kitchen, litteraly). They still have almost 600,000,000 small hold farmers...and nearly 200,000,000 ex-small hold farmers living in dire poverty. Their military's still way behind the states in terms of tech and tatics.
Infact India's catchin up to China...both economically and in terms of military strength....so there may be some conflicts there in the next few decades.
btw...why would China wanna be a new "rome"...they've had their own great empires...if anything they'll be a new "tang" style empire, not rome.
btw2....aussies you can't gosh golly darn gee willikers people from my home state...we train at altitude  your right about aussie's fighting prowess...I read this book on Galipoli....nuts, bloody-sterling guys! |

Of course China is a third world country. Their economic level is high yet the revenue is siphoned off to high political figures.
I said that China has the capabilities to be a superpower, not that they already were one. Therefore not condoning communism, although a good theory totally ineffective. |

I know that Chinas economy is growing, in fact they bought out a major Canadian mining company. But I also heard they are starting to have major difficulties with pollution and are lagging behind the world in that sense. Give China a while and if the government becomes more accountable to the people
Also, China isn't Communist, perhaps they have some old left over policies. But they have crossed into the thresh hold of capitalism a while ago. |

The next superpower? Well that is going to be a toughy.
India and China are definitly going to be rivals and possible try for a South eastern Asian empire. Russia is long gone as far as really being powerfull goes but in the near future population is going to be all that matters because eventually nukes wont be a factor due to the capability to shoot them down.
I can forsee America losing its grasp and lose its super power status as China and India will emerge as some of the strongest countries in the world. Europe wont be able to settle thier differences long enough for them to ever unite and even if they did they do not have the manpower to be a dominate super power. |

It'll never happen....you guys are burly and strong, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty you guys are artistic, nice to foreigners, generous to a fault and educated....all the worst qualities for becoming a superpower. Take it from an American, mate.
Besides, we already stole Mad Max from ya's....how you gonna be a superpower without a superhero in a race car these days? |

Why manpower?? Russia has twice or three times the man power of the US, it's still not a superpower. The UK with it's empire did not have the manpower, wouldn't you agree it's realyy economic power that gives the bragging rights?? |

| Japan is already sitting on top. You buy their cars, watch their movies [universal], cartoons, play their games. The only reason no-one notices is 'cause they're so damn polite. They're laughing and drinking sake. |

| Ladies, Ladies, Ladies, your thinking in the past. The future will be a group of super powers that all belong to unions. No single nation will have the power, it will be unions |

On a long run, it can only be a democratic state. Totalitarian regimes have no chance, even the USSR collapsed after 70 years.
China has huge capacities, and it begins to more open, just watch the news on the visit of Hu Jintao's visit in Brazil. If it unites economic power with democracy the rest of the world will have to be very aware.
Again I still think the EU can only be a second-line super power (behind the U.S. and perhaps China) but it is already a regional super power in the Western part of Eurasia and North Africa. |

China is not anymore a communist country in the meaning of the old Marxism. But it's still far not democratic. It's perhaps a state run capitalism which denies freedom rights to it's citizens. |

Agreed, less corruption and more accountably to the common people, China could accomplish unprecedented feats. |
