China by a long shot. Russia is a quasi-capitalist country run primarily by the Mafia. China, on the other hand, has the people, the technology, and the drive to become a serious superpower. They already are, really.

I'd agree with Russia or China. It takes a crazy leader with nukes like Bush has. Russia is pretty intimidating....maybe us in Canada! ah ha yeah right. Canada is the next switzerland

There's no way anyone will be able to come close to the USA in the global power stakes in the near furture. If only Europe was not so restricted by those fools in Brussels, I think it could get up there, even though there would always be massive internal divisions. If China abandons its pretence of communism and just declares itself a totalitarian democracy, which we all know it is, then it could go pretty far. Russia's days are over for now, it will take serious work to bring it to it's previous strength, and Japan just isnt big enough. India have the resources and manpower if only they could break out of being an LEDC and put aside its problems with Pakistan. Also, worryingly, we have no idea what stage North Korea is at at the moment.

i dont think that it china will become a superpower because right now they are industrializing after the fall of the soviet union and once they hit a deppression i belive that the military will suffer the most. and if you say that russia is mainly runned by mobs( which it is) the goverment does have the power to actually hire the mobs!! and they would be very effective at killing

I think that the time is coming when the nation-state will one day go the way of the city-state. Obsolete. Multi-national powers like the EU and the African equivelent may well end up surpassing stand alone countries thanks to their greater ability to centralise resources........

I think that is pretty much inevitable, which is why Britain need's to take control of the European union now before we become a cog in the European wheels carrying France and Germany to the top.

It is possible that India turns into a superpower. Also China is able to receive more political importance in the next few years. This two countries are about to become some sort of super powers. With regard to Russia, I am not very sure if you could call them a super power. I canīt believe that they are going to (even in some years) become more important in the world politics. Russia is facing some different and serious problems, which are very hard to solve. It appears to be that Russia is not able to put things in Chechenia in order and also their economic situation is not very stable - As a result of the Yukos scandal. Therefore I am not sure if Russia is really going to become big again.

yeah but it's slowing...remember that they are coming from virtually nothing..expect their growth to slow to more like what you see in 1st world nations by about 2010 give or take :-D
Personally unless Americans start tearing each other apart the States are gonna stay on top for awhile. Even if we do..we could end up stronger in the end. But I think it's gonna be an interesting century...lots of different ways power politics can play out..my personal predictions...
1. China will keep growing, but more and more slowly...eventually capturing a strong 2nd or 3rd(if europe plays it's cards right) in terms of world power.
2. Japan will become closer and closer to the US as China gets more powerful...
3. Europe if it gets over some major hurdles has the power to even take the number one spot. But they have a lot to overcome(like the bloated welfare state)
4. India will become a big player and major rival to China..economically, politcally, and culturally.
but really...who know's? That's if major nation states stay together...there's also the possibility that most of the major nation-states will have split up by the end of the century...so "shrug" |

or we'll get more and more super-states....I wouldn't mind seeing a pan-pacific super state(US, Cananda, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malasyia, ect.....) but it would take some major earth shaking events to produce something like that...and earth shaking events kinda suck

you got to understand im not talking in the terms of russia overpowering us just power in the world. russia will become a super power because its economy is finally straighting out and vladimir putin wants to make new pacts among the world powers. as long as they finally help on the war on terror (which they will now as they stated 1 week ago) in mainly afganistan (they dont care about iraq) they will become more our allies and we will end up shipping troops to their borders to keep an eye on china with 2 powers like that you cant just call the US a superpower because the pacts will prove that we will be equally divided. So in short as long as they continue with the war on terror and play their political cards straight they have the obvious best chance at becoming a superpower
