I think this is disgraceful. It makes me ashamed to be British. 'A nation of dodgy shopkeepers' is not a reputation we should aspire to.
We should pay compensation to the dead sailor's family, and foot the cost of repairs in full.

Thanks for the sympathy but its really not your fault, we wanted nuclear subs. We tried to buy used nuclear subs off you but since you built them with american technology you had to get the permision from the USA to sell them. They would not allow you to sell them to us because they covet our arctic territory for some reason, specifically the arctic islands that we bought off of you in the early 20th century. They claim that since we cant patroll them the USA should take controll, but the only reason we cant patroll them is because the USA will not sell the tech to us. The circle of the US screwing Canada. Thanks for your sympathy and potentially your help in repairing our subs but its not your fault.

Besides, I'm sure there was an "as is" clause in the sale. The Canadian Government should take full responsibility for this one.We may not have a big armed forces but we should try to equip them with the best gear imho.

Really, the whole reason for the US presence in the Artic circle was the Cold War and the continued monitoring of Russia. The fact is that we stood more to lose if the Russians got an advantage in the Artic Ocean than the Canadians did.

When has the U.S. pressured Canada into selling the Artic islands? As far as I know, the two militaries often conduct joint exercises on these islands. As for "old-fashioned imperialism," if hostile American submarines were patrolling Canadian waters, that would be one thing, but we are currently Canada's allies. Our submarines in the Artic area don't pose any threat whatsoever to Canada.

I partially agree with Zed. The Canadian government should have known that there were problems with the submarine before buying it. However, I also think that the British government bears the bulk of the responsibility for selling them a sub that was known to have problems. Now, I don't know the details of the sale, but either the British government was being deceptive or the Canadian government was being stupid.

All the checks were carried out pre sale by the Canadians and it was to their satisfaction. The sub was doing sea trials to get the crew familiar with procedures not to evaluate the technical side of the boat which had already been done, it's not the UK's fault it's just one of those things, probably deteriated wiring, so unless you gut the boat and change every single cable your never going to stop a fault like that.
