Jim Webb Threatens to 'Slug' President Bush
Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 11:22 a.m. EST
Newly elected Senator Jim Webb, D-Va., was so infuriated by a remark from President George W. Bush that the former Marine officer was tempted to punch the commander-in-chief.
The confrontation, disclosed in the influential Washington, D.C.-based publication The Hill, came shortly after the midterm elections at a private White House reception for newly elected lawmakers.
Webb, who defeated Republican Sen. George Allen in Virginia, ran a campaign critical of the administration’s Iraq policy, and has a son, a Marine lance corporal, serving in Iraq.
At the reception, Bush asked Webb how his son was doing.
Webb answered that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, a source close to Webb reported.
"I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing,” Bush countered, according to the source.
Emily Heil wrote in The Hill: "Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t.”
Webb’s spokeswoman Kristian Denny Todd confirmed that "Jim did have a conversation with Bush at that dinner. Basically, he asked about Jim’s son; Jim expressed the fact that he wanted to have him home.”
Todd wouldn’t comment on Bush’s response.

Wow, what a class act this Webb guy is turning out to be. Shouldn't the Secret Service take a look into anyone threatening the president, regardless of whether he somehow got elected senator? |

I doubt that. Look I think Webb served proudly as a Marine, but wanting to slug teh president is something you should keep to yourself. Not to say that he can't be critical of Bush's policies, after all it is the US, just that he shouldn't openly admit that he wanted to harm another person, especially the president. |

No.....In the end they could still result in actions opun another person. If Bush would have hit him first, then yes, temptation be damned, and Webb should defend himself. Bush can be an ****, if that's what you feel he is, but Webb has to maintain his cool.
He practically admitted that he thought about harming the president.
Even though I know I'll have people murder me on this, I think that George Bush got the upper hand on Webb in this case. Bush was right, even if kind of an **** manner, when he said that Webb didn't answer the question; Now that Webb has admitted that he thought about hitting Bush that shows that he may have some anger issues. No matter how you cut it, this is a plus one for Bush. |

Naw, this is about a man talking about another man's son. Slugging him isn't going to kill him (I don't think).
Plus, he only thought about it. Luckily were not Catholics, for the most part, and so we don't believe the thought of slugging is just as bad as actually slugging.
edit: Maybe Webb should have asked Bush about his daughters?
"How are your daughters? I wish they were home, too... MY home... wink wink..." |

If Webb would have hit him it would have been about hitting another person unprovokingly; Assault.
It doesn't matter if it kills him, it still does undo harm.

Absolutley true, but he didn't just think it, he said it.

Apples and oranges my friend. Asking someone how their son is while serving his nation oversees is completely different than asking the Bush twins for sexual favors. |

Yes. And there are zillions of miles between thinking to yourself that you'd like to slug somebody and actually doing it. Particularly when you're an elected official and the person you want to slug is the President of the United States.
Doesn't say much for Webb's maturity or gravitas, does it? |

how twisted is that logic
He never said he threatened Bush..he said he was tempted.
You can be arrested for using threatening language...but not for having threatening thoughts.
That is unless......anti-terrorism laws go a lot deeper than I thought  |

I don't think that's the question... I think the question is the lying thread title, because rather than saying to president bush "I'm going to punch you," he said to a friend "boy, that Bush got me so mad I was tempted to slug him."
There is in fact a difference. |

 Don't even get me started on the Bush twins. If I was still a teenager I'd have posters of them on my walls, though.

Which makes the better headline, "Webb tempted to slug president" or "Webb threatens to slug president"? Hey, it's NewsMax, they're trying to drive traffic off those emails I subscribe to, a little sensationalism is to be expected.
I still think if a guy says he felt tempted to punch the president, I think the secret service should open up a file on him at the very least. No joking there - this guy already seems a bit too unbalanced to handle Washington. |

Bush was right? Oh my...
Here, I have a song for you.
Webb feels the same way many of us feel who are against this war, and Bush's endless lies only intensifies that anger. Webb answered Bush's question perfectly; he just didn't like the answer. 8:) |

Give me credit for being a part of the base and still being able to take NewsMax with a grain of salt, though. |

So lets not be really truthful then as politicians and servers of the people?
Why can't he admit his feelings? After all he is a trained Marine? |

He can admit anger, but doing that and admitting that you thought about harming someone are totally different things. |
