"First it was like four shots," he said. "And then it was like pop-pop-pop like 12 times."

Police kill groom on day of wedding, reports say
• Relatives say dead man was Sean Bell, due to get married Saturday
• Bell and fiancee had two children, Rev. Al Sharpton says
• Police shot Bell and two other men as they left strip club
• Police Department's chief spokesman declines to comment

Now nothing has been said regarding the motive in this shooting but,
this level of violence seems unwarranted since these men apparently had no weapons.
In my opinion, this strikes me as some sort of assasination rather than a simple misunderstanding.
I have no evidence of this but, my gut instinct tells me this might be the case and
these men may not even be the intended victims.

What do you think ?

Why the f**k would you shoot a groom on the day of a wedding and he clearly has no weapons?

A large measure of the unemotional factual detail has been left out, so it is hard to make an objective opinion. We live in dangerous times, and police being human practice fight or flight - even when trained to ignore the tendency. For some reason they feared for their lives and reacted accordingly to some stimulis. It is always a tragedy when people die.

I generally say 'f**k the police', but after reading the article, I'm not real clear on what happened.

Probably some bulls**t related to the "War on Drugs".

Do you honestly think they knew he was a groom?

Do you think they would have cared? If his actions were interpreted as "threatening" it wouldn't matter who he was or if it was his wedding day.

Truly a wacky, if not mildly scary, tale. Of course, let's not forget what a wide range of things "threatening" can apply to, from Rodney King to a six-year-old to who knows what. Then again, who's really to blame for that?

If his actions appeared threatening, then he is to blame for that. The cops could have misinterpreted his actions though.

Exactly, but hey- have you ever seen what one of those credit cards can do? It's frightening, really. So I suppose that our victim was not your standard white, middle-class, male, or would that be racial profiling (something, of course, our fine police force doesn't do).

I think that more facts are needed if a reasonable debate is to ensue.

The fact that they rammed into one cop and hit the van twice aren't the acts of sane people.I suspect though that there is more to the story as to what made them decide to try to get away in this manner.

agreed.

given the current situation it looks like the police were completely wrong. however there isn't enough data on the situation to make a conclusive argument for what happened.

They rammed the cops with their car several times, injuring some officers.

I would say that is pretty threatening.

Also, who goes to a batchelor party at a titty bar on the day of their wedding?

Something is a little fishy about this story.

Hello, this is my first post.

Quote: Associated Press:

But minutes after walking out of the club and getting into their car, something went wrong. A block away, their Nissan Altima rammed into an undercover police officer and an unmarked NYPD minivan, authorities said.

Police fired 50 rounds at vehicle, killing the 23-year-old Bell, a father of two young children. His two friends, Trent Benefield, 23, and Joseph Guzman, 31, were badly wounded. The men were not carrying guns.

[..]

The rounds fired at the car hit the vehicle 21 times, and also sprayed nearby homes and a train station, though no residents were injured. One officer fired his weapon 31 times, emptying two full magazines, Kelly said.

Police thought one of the men in the car might have had a gun. But armed with a search warrant, police found no weapons.

I would venture that lots of people go to titty bars for their bachelor parties... also I don't think grazing an undercover cop's leg counts as assault, the guy never made it clear that he was an officer before he began shooting.

Even if the driver of the car was drunk or running out on his bar tab, he didn't merit being fired upon, especially considering he was unarmed and unaware of his offending actions towards police (the car he hit was also unmarked).

New York's finest...

All the officers carried 9 mm handguns.
A veteran officer reloaded his 9 mm handgun and emptied both magazines ?

Now that's what seems rather fishy. Oh well, several days in court, and several police statements later, maybe then we'll really have enough facts to talk about this incident.
