| When is the "right thing" not the right thing to do? I don't know how many of you are fans of the show House, however it's what has brought this question to my mind. i'm in an argument where she says he needs to be put in jail because he's an arrogant **** (along with his addiction) and that those two things combined will end up killing someone. I say he's a brilliant doctor that despite being an addict is capable of curing people and shouldn't be imprisoned. The other doctors in the show are in a position to turn him in or help him. The question is would the right thing (turning him in) be the right thing since it would kill people? But this example isn't really what this threads about, the real purpose is: Is there any situation where the 'right thing' isn't the right thing to do? |

right and wrong are all relative. I can't really think of anything that would be absolutely "right".
As for the show House, I love it. I don't think he should be turned in b/c it would end the series... and because being an arrogant a**hole/addiction to medicine that has been prescribed to the addict are not really crimes.
And when House really does something seriously illegal, he gets in trouble, they don't just ignore crime if he commits it. Usually House doesn't cross the line and restrains himself. If he can't, well he never gets caught, which basically makes w/e he does legal, relative to him :). Anyways, I'll be enjoying another episode of House in... 10 minutes. Adios. |

Like some things, right and wrong are subjective. Note I said some things, I'm not a black and white person and I do believe there are exceptions to every rule.
The reason I say that doing the "right" thing is probably sometimes wrong.. let's give an example:
A woman has a mother who is failing in health and mental facalties. After much heart wrenching investigation and speaking with health care professionals, she comes to the conclusion that 'putting mom into a home' is the "right" thing to do.
Most of society would probably agree that it was the "right" thing to do, some would argue it was the "wrong" thing to do based on their own experiences and/or predefined opinions as to whether nursing homes for the eldery is ever a "right" place to house someone that can no longer care for themselves.
I'm sure the eldery mom would think it was the "wrong" thing to do.. after all... dementia or not.. who wants to go into a nursing home and have total strangers care for you?
People would most likely overwhelmingly say that murder is "wrong" - and I would be one of those people. There are exceptions to every rule however, and the world is not black and white over what is right and what is wrong.
However, to the man who had to kill a man that tried to rob him then proceed to beat the shyt out of him.... murdering a person (and lets face it, it is murder even if it was done in the name of self defense) was the "right" and *only* thing to do, and I'm sure that if self defense was proven in a court of law, society again, would agree that the victim did indeed do the "right" thing.
Murder is still wrong at its core 'meaning' - but the reasons for murder would be the 'right' reasons. |
