I want to share my thoughts on Russia and it's people.
I have a Russian roots my self but I don't consider my self as a Russian, if I go to Russia than I'm a foreigner there just like most of you.
But it hurts me deeply to see the stupidity of some people who still think that Russians are "bare footed" monsters, the Russia is great, actually it is doing better all the time, it is fighting terror and developing democracy in a very big country with complex population, and if you think that FSB and Russian president has actually anything to do with killings of journalists and former FSB agents, than you are stupid or just read only the tittles of the articles in newspaper.
So all this bad image is no more than a product of a) the series of PR actions that were intended to harm relationship between Russia and western civilization, and b) a tendency in Hollywood movies to show Russians as an enemy, which can be explained by simple need of a villain. The Russian mafia and the likes didn't help ether, but no one seems to hate Italy for that.
What did Russians do to the world ? I mean seriously bad? They produce terrible cars and rubbish movies, but did they drop a nuclear bomb? or tried to conquer the world? What I can remember now is that they actually stopped 2 of attempts to conquer the world or at least took a major part in stopping them.
What I mean is that I'm quite familiar with Russian mentality, you can easily get your ass kicked in the streets of Moscow or on streets of any town anywhere in the world by Russians, and they behave badly and they drink too much vodka, but that is where the "bad" ends. From Estonians I hear stuff like "Russian soldiers burned my house and took my father" well of course they did, because your father was fighting on Nazis side what is wrong with that? It was war after all.
And do you know why Soviet Union did not try to invade any countries for 70 years while being one of the mightiest and powerful sides of it's time, with army that hardly any country in the world could compare with?
Simply because it was Russians. There is an old Russian saying that translates into English like: We don't need another's gold. Now I know several languages and I don't know anything like that in any other language.
Please share your thoughts, If you don't like Russians please explain why? |

I doubt you'd find any and/or many Americans that don't like Russians.
We have several Russian nationals, taking classes locally, and it's very interesting to compare and contrast culture perceptions and experiences. |

I have Russian friends (two of whom were born in the USSR) and find them to be very nice people.
As for Russia itself, I believe it is on a path for greater authoritarianism but also more greatness in the future. |

Well I'm impressed.
That's exactly what I'm saying you have to have opinion on Russians as nationality based on your own experience. |

Why did everyone over look his foremost statement? "Did they try to conquer the world?" Yes.
They always have been since the 1600s, constantly expanding and no shame for it...most nations of the time did the same, the British Empire was the most successful, followed by France, then the late-comer but most successful of them all, the United States.
The animosity comes when great powers run out of lesser powers to conquer.
In 1943 Russian officials began to draft their own post war world ruled by Moscow, it was later revealed when the Soviet Union fell that the Cold War was entirely the unintended consequence of Russia's global ambitions.
America's policy of "Keep Russia out and Germany and Japan down" did wonders for preserving relative peace through the latter half of the 1900s. |

Well no way, I think I even mentioned that. Perhaps you should read - and then when you're done, read it again. |

Well it was my mistake, I meant in the way that Hitler or Napoleon did.
But than again:
