Quote: DoD Announces Air Force Airman as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown
The Department of Defense announced today the identity of an airman listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN).
Maj. Troy L. Gilbert was the pilot of an Air Force F-16C engaged in support of coalition ground combat operations that crashed approximately 20 miles northwest of Baghdad Nov. 27.
Gilbert is assigned to the 309th Fighter Squadron, Luke Air Force Base, AZ and currently deployed to the 332nd Expeditionary Wing, Balad Air Force Base, Iraq.
An investigation is ongoing.
No real point to make here other than to say it looks like an appalling situation. I assume that this has been posted after the wreckage has been located. To find him dead would have been bad enough, but not to find him at all makes me wonder what scum have done what to him.
Perhaps, for his sake, I hope he is already dead. Perhaps it should be taken as a sign of hope.
I just think that its one of those bits of news that leaves no doubts in the minds of either "pro-war" or "anti-war" that we hate to hear bad news about those in the US military and that we recognise that there are low-life pondscum wretches who inhabit Iraq.
Of course...I hope after posting this it doesn't come out that, badly injured, he was taken in by insurgents and nursed slowly back to life  Well I wouldn't mind if it did turn out that way but you know what I mean.
But even if that were the case, the sentiment would remain the same, just those insurgents wouldn't be included in the lowlife pondscum bit .... |

Don't worry. It won't.
p.s. I agree...regardless of political affiliation, ideology or opinion we all feel and fear for the safety of our own. |

I think that you're being a little harsh on our useful friend-pondscum :-D

But we all join you in hoping that this guy has not met a horrible fate. |

One of the few times we should pray that he died on impact.
It would be a blessing from God if he did.

If they did nurse him back to life it would only be so he could scream louder when they tortured him to death. |

Well you hope for a bit of Walt Disney in real life, but I'm afraid I'm inclined to believe you're right. |

The insurgency is that dispicable and ruthless to do just that.
Lord only knows what truly happened, and whether the pilot is o.k. or not. But I'm praying for him anyway. |

I hope he survived. He's only been missing a couple of days, and all pilots should be trained in survival and evading capture. Plus the Insurgency isn't as well organised as the former Iraqi Armed Forces would have been. I don't think it's likly that he's been captured by insurgents.
I hope he can find water and stay alive long enough his brethren to find him. |

You mentioned a scenario I hadnīt thought of.
Iīd assumed that this had happened in a relatively built up area, that the US guys would get there pretty quickly and that being the case the only reason for him not to be there or for Iraqis not to tell the Americans where he was, is that the scum had got hold of him.
I hope you are right. If so if could be pretty scary for him right now knowing who to trust and who not to. Bur I would hope that Us troops would have swarmed the area to such a degree that if he was hiding out, he would have at some stage found himself able to reach out and touch one. |

Quote: Air Force officials said in a news conference Wednesday that human remains were retrieved from the crash site. They would not elaborate, but said figuring out whether Gilbert is dead depended largely on those remains, which were undergoing DNA identification
It looks likely that he died on board and that they are his remains that have been recovered at the scene.
In which case that would be a relief.
May he rest in peace. |

Ditto.
God answers prayers in the best way He can.
Dead on impact is a blessing in this case, because the site was swarmed by bogies right after it went down.
Dying s*cks, but being caught alive would have been worse. |
