OK, so I was watching the movie, Elf, just now... and it suddenly occurred to me that New York City is the most commonly-used city for strange characters who are either lost or out-of-place. It's a common theme.

Elf = human who thinks he's an elf in New York
Crocodile Dundee = Paul Hogan, learning the city life in New York
George of the Jungle (movie) = George goes to New York
Home Alone 2 = McCauley Culkin lost in New York
King Kong = big monkey goes berserk in New York
K-Pax = alien guy, Kevin Spacey travels to New York
Coming to America = crazy African prince, Eddie Murphy, goes to New York
Little Nicky = Satan's son, stuck in New York
Godzilla (1998 re-make) = Godzilla attacks New York
TMNT = mutant ninja turtles living in the New York sewers
Coneheads = aliens that get stuck in New York
Highlander = immortal Scotsman fighting in New York
Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Batman & Superman Returns = New York

Can anybody think of any other examples?

Apparently:

STRANGE\CONFUSED MAIN CHARACTER(S) + NEW YORK = $$$$$$

Why are writers so obsessed with this city?

EDIT:

added batman

Couldn't tell you why anyone would wanna live there, or why people are so drawn too it. Small cities are much better.

I thought of that, but that's not really a MOVIE and it doesn't exactly follow the pattern. But yeah!

My buds had Elf on as well.

New York City is a blast though. I like big cities. Diversity makes things much more interesting, and people are more open minded.

Seinfeld was actually filmed in California. :)

Because New York has become to prime example of an American city.

New York has become the theatrical symbol of generic America, as you've stated.

Absolutely.

Boston also has a very nice subway system, but it's a very different atmosphere than New York.

The two cities are very similar, but have very different cultures.

Yeh, I think I would take Central Park. Some apartments there are priced in the millions though.

Most property in Manhattan is upwards of six figures.

I'd take an apartment in Brooklyn, or the Bronx (or Queens, if I really had to), to start, and then work my way up to an apartment in Manhattan, or even a house on Staten Island.

It's dirty and their buildings are old and crappy.

It pays to have a fire wipe out all the ghetto and get a new clean modern city.

Chicago pwns New York in every way.

Manhattan... These things are only interesting to outsiders. I dont really see them as anything other than volumes of concrete. Central park is ok.

No.. that's Detroit.

Yeah, so that the ghettos can be rebuilt, and this time, fire-proof!

FCTE wrote: Chicago pwns New York in every way.

Eh, my parents are from Chicago, I've lived around Chicago my whole life, and I've never really liked it.

One trip to New York, and I fell in love with the place. The culture, the atmosphere, the oppertunity, the people, the Yankees ( )...

I'd take New York over Chicago anyday. My parents love Chicago, but I could never get into it.
