I´ve got to do the Christmas Disco for my childrens school in a couple of weeks time.

Not that I´m a professional DJ or even an amateur one...it´s just that I played the CDs once for them, I don´t charge and so seem to have been landed with the job permanently!

Now the disco is split into two parts...children aged 4-7 and then 8-11.

There´s a lot of obvious songs to play. But as well as them I like to try and be a bit different if I can. Last year I came across a song called "Just Be Happy" which, as far as I know has never been a hit over here (by which I mean the UK despite my current Swiss location) but which went down well. If only I had the promotion rights on it I reckon I could make it big :lol:

So what I´m after is any ideas that would help me make it a little bit different. I have no idea of what´s current as my music is all in the past so ideas for good happy feely songs out there at the moment, but I don´t think hardcore rap would be appreciated :shock:

One idea I have is to intersperse a few songs with the Dr Who theme and tell ther kids we are on one of his time travels. That way I get to play the music I like while hopefully they think I´m being all trendy! (Dr Who is a sixties series about a "Time Lord" which has recently been very successfully updated in the UK...the kids love it)

But any ideas...or just stories about what songs you enjoy hearing in the disco environment (why don´t they play slow ones any more :( ) would be much appreciated :-D

Well, both my children are in the 8-11 range, but they listen to mostly 'pop' music. My daughter of course is into Kelly Clarkson and a few of the teeny bopper girl bands (I don't even know the names) and my son is more of an alternative music person.

I'm unsure if you're looking for a specific theme or....? You mention Dr. Who and while it's popular in the UK, the kids here have no clue who that is.. they might if they were a bit older, but anyway....

What I'm trying unsuccessfully to say here, is that the differences in musical tastes may vary greatly from the U.S. to the U.K (or Switzerland.. where are you exactly?) so I don't know of any advice or suggestions to make.

Just load up a mix by Sasha, Van Dyk, or Zabiela, and just hit play. That my friend, is good ch00ns.

Thundertaker, the disco lasts in total for three hours. It was the for the last hour after I'd played all Black Lace's greatest hits volumes 1-10, for which I was seeking assistance

In that case, how about rounding the evening off with a steady stream of violent gangsta rap extolling the virtues of gang warfare, misogyny and drug abuse?
After listening to 2 hours of Black Lace, even the parents would find that a refreshing change.
I can reccomend a few albums. Which do you prefer, west coast or east coast? Or are you not bothered?
