Whatever happened to the mantra "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear"? THis slogan was used by the Bush administration and it's followers to justify domestic spying without warrants.
Now it seems this phrase can be used more appropriately at Bush and his administration in regards to investigations; especially about domestic spying.
What happened to this mantra, and why aren't the staunch Bush supporters still saying it in regards to domestic spying? |

| I don't remember that being a Bush slogan but I hear about the same number of people say it now as in the past. |

I don't remember that slogan as being official, though I did hear it from numerous supporters of domestic survelliance.
I do agree with the sentiment however, it is sad when more investigation is done into the personal lives of American citizens than is done into the official lives of our representatives. It is the government who should be transparent to the people, not the other way around. |

Maybe they should change it to: spill your guts, and we won't torture you. |

The only people I've ever heard using this expression are private citizens. Usually very young. And my answer has always been that while I don't have anything to hide in my medicine cabinet and underwear drawer either, you still shouldn't look into them. It's not polite. |

Turnabout is fair play let's combine The West Wing with The Truman Show and use the white house as reality TV. |

How do the Bush Supporters react (now that they are the target of investigations) regarding the phrase "If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about" |

I think my friend Thrilla was wondering about the adherence to forum rules and also what substantive position informs this debate.
At the moment, there ain't any...other than a quick anti-Bushism. Might be fun for Bush haters but not much of a debate. |

| I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear. It is part of living free in America and is also relative to the times. Anything wrong with that? 8:) |

I don't think people say it anymore because they realized it's unconstitutional. They are investigating someone without probable cause or evidence to support they are a criminal. Just because you make phone calls out of state does not mean you are a terrorist.
It would be akin to a police officer breaking into someones house and rooting through all of their things looking for an illegal act. |

Bush supporters are not the the target of investigations.
the slogan predates the Bush administration
Im unaware of any instance where Bush has used this slogan
And Jeffs, you are correct.. the lack of a substantive opinion on the matter did hasten my involvement in the thread...as did a potentially fallacious claim
Quote: Well evidently you disagree with me, that makes it a debate. if the only debate present is over the point of the thread.. ill lock it down now... thread starters have the responsibility to clearly state the debate issue and guide the debate pertaining to that issue....anything less is a waste of space, money and time. |

http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/11/messages/427.html
Quote: Just a guess but I think Senator Joe McCarthy may have originated that phrase.
The US and Communist Russia were, after WW2, involved in a Cold War for many decades.
Senator Joe, in the early 1950s, was convinced that the US was being infiltrated by Reds and Lefties so he whipped up public opinion with the aid of certain newspapers and influential newspaper columnists.
The US Congress created a special committee to look into the "Red Menace" entitled the House Un-American Activities Committee ( HUAC ) and he was the chairman of the HUAC.
His operatives and henchmen investigated certain people's backgrounds and if the Senator did not like what his people found then the victims of his investigations would be "invited" to testify before HUAC.
If you chose to invoke your right NOT to testify then the Senator would bellow out in a most scary fashion that "if you had nothing to hide...".
Eventually, people started shouting back at him,he fell from grace and eventually slithered back into the cave from whence he came.
If you have nothing to hide, why do you want to make me get a warrant? has been a knee jerk response from surveillance supporters who tried to tout the Presidents warrantless wiretaps. In fact it was a topic in one of the debates here recently if my memory is correct. |

The point of this thread is that the slogan seems to have disappeared, and the Bush supporters aren't using it any longer in regards to no warrant domestic spying. Why is that? Is it because the Bush supporters have grown tired of thier own deceit against our country, or is it because they are trying to spin the fact that Bush has domesticaly spied on the citizens of this country now that he has a congress that can actually charge him if he has performed criminal actions. |

I never heard anything of the sort from the Bush administration and would appreciate a link to provide evidence that they said anything of the sort. I doubt they said anything that could be construed to even imply that.
Bush supporters - or this administrations supporters - are supporters - not followers. Followers follow Rev. Sun Jung Moon or the like - or Madonna on her world tour.
There is no Domestic py program. There is a terrorist surveillence program used to listen to foreign calls from known Al Qeada coming into the UNited States and then those calls being placed by Al Qeada from within the US going out. Links established through evidence collected from actuall real live terrorists on the field of battle and so forth. Uncle Sam hasn't got his ear to your telephone - so don't panic. He doesn't want to know your Christmas shopping plans. |

There. It's been said, it's been implied, and it's almost been the Bush Mantra, as one poster already pointed out.
The only people here who don't think this is "debatable" are the Bush Apologists.
I say sick the dogs on them and make them talk. |
