I recently increased my HD space, so I have a ton of space for music-making software.

Anyone here make music? If so, got any suggestions for any good software synths?

I use Fruity Loops Studio to mix it all, so I can also use DXI and VST plugins too.

Oh, and if anybody has a suggestion as to which other digital audio workstations might be better (besides Pro Tools -- I don't want new hardware), any suggestions are welcome.

I mix music with Ableton Live. You can use Ableton to make sounds/mash things together too. Otherwise some Sony products might help? Sound Forge, ACID, etc.

Do Ableton, Sound Forge, or Acid Loops have built-in software synths? I used Acid Loops years ago and I don't believe it does. I'd also prefer audio workstations which have an easy-to-use interface and short learning curve. (It's taken me a couple years to figure out Fruity Loops. They actually sell tutorials on how to use it and they have classes devoted to learning how to use it.)

That's what was so appealing about Fruity Loops. Those others seem geared more towards looping pre-recorded wavs than recording live software synths.

Then again, if it's faster, I might switch and just set up Fruity Loops to output its synth to the other software and use ReWire to connect them.

I've had a problem with FL crackling through my speakers when it comes to sounds that are too loud or too low in frequency (too much bass). Before anybody says it's a latency issue, though, I doubt that's it because it's not a matter of too many sounds playing at once, but too many sounds playing at one frequency. Turning down the bass for any given instrument will solve the problem, but then again, I don't get that thumping sound I like.

I read on one site that layering too many low-frequency sounds over top of one another is a problem for any audio workstation -- is that true?

Also, I forgot to mention: I already have Kontakt, I've used Absynth before too, and both are great. I plan on getting Absynth again and probably some other products by Native Instruments.

Doing some digging on Google...

I haven't tried their other synths yet, but this guy's distortion VST is nice (and it's free).

EDIT:

Yeah, other synths are real nice too, except detuna.
