The point here is even if you travel to america peacefully on holiday, you are still made to feel like s**t by US immigration.
As I can certainly testify. I believe it takes a special breed to make a US immigration person.
That is not a welcome.
And you do not feel welcome. |

Strictness isn't the issue. Rudeness is. I visit the U.S. once a year. I have a U.S. passport, am not wanted for anything, am a 65-year old retired person. It should be pretty easy. Sorry, it isn't.
One year I was taking avocado leaves to a friend. I got shuffled to a special room for drug people to inspect my luggage. I understood that. My suitcase went through a machine and I stood there and stood there while these men chatted and laughed. Finally, one looked at me and said, "What do you want?" "Well, I was awaiting farther instructions."
One of the men jerked his thumb over his shoulder and I said, "Does that mean I can leave?" "Yes." "Thank you, very much."
Another year a guy in a black jumpsuit, which seems rather inappropriate for a chubby guy sitting at a desk, took my passport, waved it under a machine, and asked me where I'd been. "Mexico." "How long?" I thought a bit and said, "A little over a year." "My god, why?" I bit my tongue and then said, "I live there. Is there a problem? I'm a U.S. citizen with a valid passport." He threw the passport over the counter and jerked his head. Perhaps they have a class in non-verbal directives.
No, I go through the process every year and I don't look forward to it. I should say that different entry points seem to have very different attitudes. For me, Atlanta has always been fairly pleasant. Houston, no. |

Not as much as they used to, and I'm not talking about the desperate Mexicans coming over the Texan border. We're talking tourists and other people with money.
I have been thinking of going back to america once I've graduated, but I don't want to be treated like an Al-Quada terrorist as soon as I arrive at Dulles.........
If you are bringing in guns, drugs, money, or duct tape, you shouldn't have to stand in line to long. If you are of a Mid-Eastern decent, expect a body cavity search for your luggage. If you are Swiss, do not bring your cheese or cut the cheese while in flight. If your Mexican, you maybe asked if you voted for Bush, plan to have an incountry baby delivery, and do you have a round ticket to Canada. The first thing I see wrong with you is you are too intelligent - overqualified, above a "C Grade," average and that might be a Bush Home Security no-no. We are looking for dumb redneck types with cow-paddy kickin' boots, and a slight speech draw is a plus. If you can say words like "getty-up," "aw shucks," or "tan my hide partner," they will probably pass you and your luggage right on through.
You should be fine, just don't bring anything into this country except your plane ticket.
I am not a redneck, as you call southerners, but i have a simple rule i live by and that is that if a man denigrates a group just because they don't squeal like stuck pigs when he does it , then i would not trust them as far as i could throw them. Back stabbers are not your friends "Thundertaker". America welcomes one and all that are willing to abide by our laws. It may take a little more time going through customs today because of the threat we are all under, but this is the same America.
After the 1st of the year every person entering or leaving will have to possess a passport, so times are getting complicated. I don't feel we are under a threat of terrorists, rather threats from government leaders and gangs of murderers and thiefs.
Watching who comes into America has always been the job of government, terrorist threat or not. When they do their job, there is no threat.
To American Juggarnaut: Amen brother to usa 1: unfortuanatly this is thier way of doing thier jobs, Im not sorry for what they are doing...just the lack of common decency they are doing it with. |

I've known plenty of rich Europeans who live in the US illegally. |

Well, one girl I knew from England wanted to stay at my house because the INS kept coming to her apartment looking for her.
Why? Most of them were musicians or associated with the music industry. I guess they liked the scene here. |

Would it have been too much effort to get a green card? |

I don't know what the deal with that is.
Most people with that type of interest aren't notorious for wanting to make much of an effort, though, so I suppose that had something to do with it. |

I wouldn't have thought you were the type to associate with illegals, or did you report her to the INS? |

This particular illegal was likely white, female, and probably quite attractive. Don't see too many ugo's in the music business, after all. |

| People seem to think that the solution to being illegal is to just go do the paperwork. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. The key is money. If you don't have money, you don't get the visa. I suspect the young lady in the music industry didn't have the money and the Mexicans going north to work certainly don't have the money. |

Why don't you throw them out then? I'm sure the businesses and real estate agents wouldn't mind.... |

| There's nothing wrong with asking customs officials to treat people politely. Bad policeis like this are costing us both tax dollars and tourism dollars. |
