America Scarier Than the Middle East, Tourists Say
By Nathan Burchfiel
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
November 21, 2006
(CNSNews.com) - World travelers fear coming to the United States more than any other country because of strict entry policies, according to a survey released Monday by a group representing the travel and tourism industry.
"The U.S. entry process has created a climate of fear and frustration that is turning away foreign business and leisure travelers from visiting the United States," said a survey released by the Discover America Partnership.
According to the survey of more than 2,000 people, 39 percent of travelers rate America's entry process as the "world's worst" and 64 percent say that U.S. immigration officials are "rude."
The Middle East is the second-worst region to travel to, with 16 percent of travelers saying the region is the worst. Australia, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean are the world's most traveler-friendly destinations, according to the survey.
Seventy-one percent of respondents believe the U.S. "offers great freedom and opportunity to people living there" but almost as many, 70 percent, "worry about ... the way foreign visitors are treated by U.S. immigration officials and security officials when arriving or departing from U.S. airports."
Terrorism and crime do not scare foreigners thinking of traveling to the United States, but dealing with the U.S. government does. According to the survey, 36 percent of travelers won't travel to the U.S. because they fear they will be detained at the border because of a "simple mistake or misstatement."
While many people said they feared traveling to the United States, 29 percent of those surveyed had traveled to the United States in the last 18 months, more than any other region.
And visitors like the United States. Among those who had traveled to the U.S., 76 percent had a favorable opinion of the country.
Europe consistently beat the United States when travelers were asked which regions offer good values, convenient travel options, and are generally "traveler-friendly."
Fifty-five percent of travelers believe the U.S. visa application process is "unreasonably inconvenient" even though only 30 percent who had applied for visas had their request denied.
Discover America Partnership, launched in Sept. 2006 in an attempt to bolster the U.S. tourism industry, said "minor changes" in U.S. entry policy "would yield substantial gains."
The group recommended more efforts to meet world travelers' expectations of "clear communications, respect and courteous treatment" to start.

| It couldn't be that terrible. Or all the foreigners that come here wouldn't try to stay illegally. |

Well, this was about security at airports and the immigration services, not US society in general. |

Am I the only that thinks this is a good thing?
I think of it like a family. If I had a daughter and she brought some dude home, I would be very skeptical of him, maybe even intimidating, until I got a feel for him and approved. |

The tourist industry says yes, you are the only one. |

| As long as you've got nothing to hide, there should be no problem. What is CNSNews.com anyway? People flock to America in droves. The good ,the bad, and the ugly. |

Not as much as they used to, and I'm not talking about the desperate Mexicans coming over the Texan border. We're talking tourists and other people with money.
I have been thinking of going back to america once I've graduated, but I don't want to be treated like an Al-Quada terrorist as soon as I arrive at Dulles......... |

Yea--this is bad.
Next time you get laid off or get passed over for a raise--it might be because of this. |

Don't try to bring a bomb into the country and you will be welcome. This is not Iran or China, you have nothing to fear here, believe me, if you come in peace. If you've been here before than you already know this, nothing has changed. Quote: |

It's more of the people you don't want than the people you want, though... |

If you are bringing in guns, drugs, money, or duct tape, you shouldn't have to stand in line to long. If you are of a Mid-Eastern decent, expect a body cavity search for your luggage. If you are Swiss, do not bring your cheese or cut the cheese while in flight. If your Mexican, you maybe asked if you voted for Bush, plan to have an incountry baby delivery, and do you have a round ticket to Canada. The first thing I see wrong with you is you are too intelligent - overqualified, above a "C Grade," average and that might be a Bush Home Security no-no. We are looking for dumb redneck types with cow-paddy kickin' boots, and a slight speech draw is a plus. If you can say words like "getty-up," "aw shucks," or "tan my hide partner," they will probably pass you and your luggage right on through.
You should be fine, just don't bring anything into this country except your plane ticket. |

I am not a redneck, as you call southerners, but i have a simple rule i live by and that is that if a man denigrates a group just because they don't squeal like stuck pigs when he does it , then i would not trust them as far as i could throw them. Back stabbers are not your friends "Thundertaker". America welcomes one and all that are willing to abide by our laws. It may take a little more time going through customs today because of the threat we are all under, but this is the same America. |

After the 1st of the year every person entering or leaving will have to possess a passport, so times are getting complicated. I don't feel we are under a threat of terrorists, rather threats from government leaders and gangs of murderers and thiefs.
Watching who comes into America has always been the job of government, terrorist threat or not. When they do their job, there is no threat. |
