I'm against the draft. However, I do support a mandatory militia system like we used to have, but better.

On eof the great things about America and the western world as a whole is that no one is forced into military service but everyone is allowed to enjoy the freedoms protected by the military. From an Idealogocal perspective the Draft is a horrible idea.

From a Military perspective the Draft is also a horrible idea. One of the things that hold the modern military together is that everyone volunteered and that forms an Esprit de Corps, a bond that everyone is in it together for the same reasons. It is this Esprit de Corps that allows soldiers to fight on after being wounded in order to make sure the soldier next to him/her makes it home to family. You loose that Esprit de Corps once you insert conscripts (draftees) into that unit. The draftees (for the most part) will not be willing to sacrifice at the same level as a volunteer due to them not wanting to be in the military in the first place. In addition, the volunteer will loose motivation knowing that the person assigned to cover thier back does not wamt to be in the military and only cares about getting themself home in one piece and to h*ll with the next person in line. Draftees also do not tend to have the disapline of volunteer soldiers. Most of the war crimes committed by the US in vietnam was do to units loosing disapline due to draftees being forced somewhere doing something they did not want or volunteer to do.

Anyone that thinks draftees w ould help the situationin Iraq is badly mistaken. The causulty rates will increase as less motivated soldiers increase. The freindly fire rates will increase (especially amoung officers) as draftees take out frustrations on thier commanders (fragging). And we will see many more instances like Abu Gre and more instances of American soldiers killing/abusing civilians.

Then by the same token, why are politicians allowed to send people to war? Politicians have leeway when it concerns the security of our country. I wouldn't like to have the draft reinstated for various reasons, but if it was I would serve proudly. Israel has a mandatory draft for everyone and I don't see people bitching about it there.

Politicians have the 'right' to send volunteers who voluntarily volunteered after being made aware of the risks. Also, in regards to the security thing; It is easy to drag the people to war, tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism. I works the same in every country.

Amusing how a black civil rights leader would support slavery.

In any case, we all know he's just doing it to hamper support for the war. Though there seem to me to be less silly ways he could achieve such an end.

Moreover, I'm at a loss to figure out why the state has the right to at any point enslave the population. I mean that's really just a question of whether any human being is allowed to enslave any other human being. And we can certainly agree that this is not just or proper.
