http://www.abc.net.au/pm/stories/s760440.htm

There is a congressman who wishes to reinstate the draft. (read the article for all the reasons) I'm personally against it (and not just because i'm 18, i just think that an all volunteer army is better) but i was wondering if anyone here was for reinstating the draft and why.

Editted because i put the wrong link

I don't actually want a draft to happen, but if reinstating the draft was a means to ending the war (rather than actually going through with the draft), I'd be for it.

Drafts are not necessary if we are not directly threatened.

Draft is essentially forcing people into the military against their will and even forcing them to kill people. No draft.

Was that the link you meant? Because the other article didn't have to do with a draft.

I agree with micfranklin.

The draft is one of those things that gets me pissed. I can't believe some goddamn politician thinks he has the right to force others into service like that. We should draft all the politicians and let them be killed off.

Then by the same token, why are politicians allowed to send people to war? Politicians have leeway when it concerns the security of our country. I wouldn't like to have the draft rfeinstated for various reasons, but if it was I would serve proudly. Israel has a mandatory draft for everyone and I don't see people bitching about it there.

The people they send to war are currently only people who voluntarily enlisted, so there's a huge difference.

ok fine it was a crappy analogy, but my point still remains that it is well within their right (and dare I say obligation) to do it if they determine that it serves the nations security interests the best.

Israel has a draft because it is necessary for its very existence as it is surrounded by hostile countries who hold it in a very negative POV. The is not necessary in the US because of our location (we have the Atlantic to the east and the Pacific to the west as natural buffers) and even if it was, I woudln't support it as I feel if it gets to the point that a government has to force its citizens to fight a war then it is not worth fighting. Let those who wish to fight go and let those who wish to abstain stay to live in peace.

uhhhh, firstly
a draft is a form of slavery--i hope you realize that

so you'd be in favor of slavery to fulfill your ideological goals?

kinda despicable huh? yea.

except you can avoid the draft in many many ways? Except it is only for a short duration of time?

by that logic the soldiers currently in the army are slaves. Even though they voluntarily signed up, they are still slaves. Slavery is illegal in the US, so should we abolish the army as it promotes "slavery"?

soldiers are not slaves
they volunatrily signed up, making them not slaves
voluntary=not slaves
a 10 year old can understand that.

I am 41 and we need the draft yesterday. You young whipper snappers have to much time on your hands. We need to put a real gun in your hands instead of a joy stick and let you become a real man and " See the world meet interesting people and then kill them".

the draft would only make things worse because not only would our country have even more turmoil but most likely the governments enemies would just fight longer because they would see it as a last tactic to defeat them. just a guess.

That's sarcasm, right?

In case its now, don't force people to do anything they don't want to: that's how a rebellion can start.

I already said I don't actually want a draft to happen.

Merely, if it could be used as a means to end the war and get troops home, I'd support it.
