|
|
Quote: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An influential Democratic lawmaker on Sunday called for reinstatement of the draft as a way to boost U.S. troop levels and draw a broader section of the population into the military or public service.
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives' tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.
"If we're going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without a draft," he said.

Could Rangel possibly become more of a joke?
His push for a new draft a few years ago was a purely political move to scare the voters into thinking it might happen.
Now that his ilk is back in power, he must either push for such legislation or admit the whole thing was just him playing politics.
Who in their right minds would vote for a draft? Even if they believed it was necessary(which everyone knows it isn't), they would never be reelected.
However, it will be fun to watch this farce play out. |

| No politician would go along with this, short of an invasion of the United States. |

Ummm... Except for maybe the senior Democrat from New York, who also happens to be one of the most powerful leaders in the House, and in the DNC?

Agreed -- I'm still trying to figure out how this person actually got re-elected. While I can't speak for the country, I can tell you that in southeastern PA (my neck of the woods), a very big Democratic enclave, the congressman would be villified. |

He has been trying since 2003. Now, he is Chairman of WAYS AND MEANS. I wonder how all those young liberals feel about voting against the fascist Republicans now?
Quote: Rangel introduces bill to reinstate draft
Rumsfeld says he sees no need for military draft
Wednesday, January 8, 2003 Posted: 4:28 AM EST (0928 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Charles Rangel introduced a bill in Congress Tuesday to reinstate the military draft, saying fighting forces should more closely reflect the economic makeup of the nation.
The New York Democrat told reporters his goal is two-fold: to jolt Americans into realizing the import of a possible unilateral strike against Iraq, which he opposes, and "to make it clear that if there were a war, there would be more equitable representation of people making sacrifices."
"I truly believe that those who make the decision and those who support the United States going into war would feel more readily the pain that's involved, the sacrifice that's involved, if they thought that the fighting force would include the affluent and those who historically have avoided this great responsibility," Rangel said.
"Those who love this country have a patriotic obligation to defend this country," Rangel said. "For those who say the poor fight better, I say give the rich a chance."

He not only got re-elected. He got re-elected with the highest vote percentage in history. He pulled 96% of the vote in his district. He is bullet proof politically which is why he is pitching this for the Democratic Leadership Council.
I can't help but be tickled at how many unpatriotic self centered liberals may actually have to see war in the 1st person. I feel bad for the volunteer professionals that will have to carry their dead weight. Urine adds extra weight to boots. 8:) |

It shows that both parties are pro-war and both are contemptible.
Actually more the Democrats are represented by more combat vets than the Republicans. Most of your hawk heroes evaded combat like the plague. If Bush are Cheney were in actual combat the reek of s**t coming from their panties would be unbearable. Your brave heroes are so chicken hearted they can not even face peaceful dissent.
This bill is atrocious regardless of which side came up with it. If it came from the Republicans you probably would be cheering for it the loudest. |

No it doesn't, he's just one person not the whole party.
And there's already a thread for this. |

Bull. In the last Presidential Election, 73% of veterans voted Republican and against John Kerry, your Democrat war hero.
Bush and Cheney are too old to be drafted. |

Uh, no we wouldn't. Most, if not all, of us are in agreement against the draft irregardless of which party it would be proposed from. |

Actually, the guy who opposed Rangel's legislation strongest was Neo-con Rumsfeld. |

Easy there. This is the same man who thought we could hold Iraq with such few troops. |

I am a conservative Republican but do agree with Mr. Rangel on this issue. We are definitely low on our troop numbers and operational brigades. I wholeheartedly support a re-institution of the draft. I hope they will have the same exclusions as they did in the 60's and 70's and will allow college students a deferrment, as this will get our high schoolers to work hard and compete for college placement. We need at least another 2 million
soldiers to deal with the issues we face and be victorious. People who volunteer should also be given picks of assignments and a higher level of pay. If someone is going to be a volunteer that should be recognized.
Go Mr. Rangel.!! |

Is Rangel just out of his mind or is there some point to him pushing this?
There is zero chance of this happening so what is the end game? I understood when he was proposing while in the minority, but I have to admit to being completely confused by this move. |
