It worked so well with Vietnam since most of the troops there weren't volunteers.
It pisses Sangel off that the majority of troops in Iraq support the cause. If you don't like the odds, change them it seems.
actually.. volunteers accounted for over 75% of our forces in Nam.
Where did you get those statistics? Just curious. there are quite a few sources for this info... but here is a link that shows a pretty good overview of stats about Nam vets and such

Two weeks after the election and the dems are calling for a draft!
Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An influential Democratic lawmaker on Sunday called for reinstatement of the draft as a way to boost U.S. troop levels and draw a broader section of the population into the military or public service.
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (news, bio, voting record), the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives' tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.
Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was still serious about the proposal for a universal draft he raised a couple of years ago, he said, "You bet your life. Underscore serious." http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061119/pl_nm/usa_politics_draft_dc
Wow, I bet most people didn't know they were voting for the draft a few weeks ago. I'm sure that will be a popular part of the dems platform in 2008. Liberals love being drafted 8:). Could a party derail any faster than the dems have since winning the election?
What's next, prohibition?
"I'm glad I voted the Democrats into power!"
"The chicks at Berkely will dig this new look." |

We did away with the draft.
Thank President Nixon.
You guys are bringing it back. 8:)
Quote: Rangel is just baiting the Republicans to point out who the real warmongers are. Bush and Co would have a draft if they could figure out how to get one. Especially for the poor and black.
We have an all volunteer militaryy, so nobody goes anywhere who hasn't signed on the dotted line voluntarily.
This is your future.......

So? It doesn't make his voice the voice of all Democrats. His particular view on some things could certainly differ from the party's. |

Especially if most of the newly elected democrats are moderate as many on this board have suggested... :-| |

Judging by stuff he said in the article:
"If we're going to challenge
Iran and challenge
North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to
Iraq, we can't do that without a draft,"
"I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft. I think to do so is hypocritical,"
I don't think he actually wants a draft, he just wants to back Repubs into a corner. |

You were mislead. That never, ever was true. That was another lying talking point on the part of Republicans. |

It tells me you need a course in congressional leaders. Speaker of the House is #1. Majority Leader is #2 |

When there are units facing their second, and in at least one case, third deployment, something is amiss. |

Oh, I don't know. Overall, Americans seem far more tolerant of enslaving young men to be sent far away to kill people who pose no threat to Americans (in America) than they would be of enslaving the same young men to do something mundane, like picking cotton. |

I don't think he actually wants a draft, he just wants to back Repubs into a corner. OK, so he's not serious?
How is it helpful to introduce sham legislation then?
If you read his comments, he is serious whatever the motivation. If he thinks that having a draft will make this country less willing do go to war, then so what...he still wants the draft. Ironically, to keep us out of war.
It's moronic for sure, but hey, that's Rangel. |
