|
|
I remember a lot of Dems dismissing Rangel as not being serious about his draft legislation before, but guess what, he is.
That's right, cut and run, tax raises, terrorist rights, and ethics dilemmas are not enough.
Two weeks after the election and the dems are calling for a draft!
Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An influential Democratic lawmaker on Sunday called for reinstatement of the draft as a way to boost U.S. troop levels and draw a broader section of the population into the military or public service.
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (news, bio, voting record), the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives' tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.
Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was still serious about the proposal for a universal draft he raised a couple of years ago, he said, "You bet your life. Underscore serious." http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061119/pl_nm/usa_politics_draft_dc
Wow, I bet most people didn't know they were voting for the draft a few weeks ago. I'm sure that will be a popular part of the dems platform in 2008. Liberals love being drafted 8:). Could a party derail any faster than the dems have since winning the election?
What's next, prohibition? |

| I doubt all that to get the draft back would work. And plus, I wouldn't go into the military anyway. |

| Even if Rangel does introduce his bill, he still needs the votes on the floor. Most Democrats don't want the draft, regardless of what Rangel thinks. |

No chance in hell draft is getting anywhere near the president's desk
Rangel is making himself look foolish.
The idea that forcing people to goto war is better than having people volunteer is the stupidest most retarded idea i have ever heard of. i could not have dreamed up a more inane idea. This guy is truly not someone who is operating on all cylinders. |

First off, the title of your thread is flawed. One fool suggesting the return of the draft does not = the Dems suggesting it.
Second, who the heck are the people actually voting for this guy??? |

And yet he is to be chairman of the single most powerful committee in the house... possibly even in Washington...
Go figure...

I'm curious to know how many of the U. S. posters here between the ages of 18 and 26 have registered with the Selective Service?
From the Military Selective Service Act...
Sec. 453. Registration
(a)
Except as otherwise provided in this title (sections 451 to 471a of this Appendix) it
shall be the duty of every male citizen of the United States, and every other male
person residing in the United States, who, on the day or days fixed for the first or
any subsequent registration, is between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, to
present himself for and submit to registration at such time or times and place or
places, and in such manner, as shall be determined by proclamation of the
President and by rules and regulations prescribed hereunder. The provisions of this
section shall not be applicable to any alien lawfully admitted to the United States as
a nonimmigrant under section 101(a)(15) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as
amended (66 Stat. 163; 8 U.S.C. 1101), for so long as he continues to maintain a
lawful nonimmigrant status in the United States. |

Agreed. The draft isn't coming back anytime soon I don't think. |

| If Charlie Rangel pursues this, he is signing his own political death warrant. |

| There's no way there will be a draft, unless the cons do it. Rangel is just baiting the Republicans to point out who the real warmongers are. Bush and Co would have a draft if they could figure out how to get one. Especially for the poor and black. |

Not likely. Rangel will be in office until he decides he's done. |

Agreed... His district overwhelmingly approves of him.
Scary, eh? |

Well, I don't blame him then -- I blame his constituents. |

What? He introduced it originally in 2003, he's been re-elected twice since then.
He's simply making a statement.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/01/07/rangel.draft/
The New York Democrat told reporters his goal is two-fold: to jolt Americans into realizing the import of a possible unilateral strike against Iraq, which he opposes, and "to make it clear that if there were a war, there would be more equitable representation of people making sacrifices."
The bill was defeated 402-2, and Rangel voted against it.
Rep. John P. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat, and Rep. Pete Stark, California Democrat, voted for the measure.

And it's only been two weeks since the election. |

This is a dirty, dirty trick by the Democrats then. |
