...a leading Russian critic of Putin's regime has been poisoned in London (near-death by sushi).

Perhaps we shouldn't be overly enthusiastic about linking arms and singing "Kumbaya."

if any one person midst 99% of the US population that chooses to critisize Russia was poisoned, it would be a KGB conspiracy... right?

Hey, JFK and RFK both hated the soviets, their deaths could have only been soviet conspiracys!

do you know how easy it is to get sick off of sushi?... you do realise that if that sushi was just a little bit not fresh he would have gotten sick?... or if the same place prepares foogu in any way, a lot of people could have died?

The problem with Russians, as one commentator put it, is that after Ivan the Terrible they got used to the idea of being ruled by tyrants.

Taking the US population, JFK or RFK criticizing the Soviets and comparing it to the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy who had just written a book criticizing the Kremlin is irrelevent and ridiculous.

There were large doses of thallium _ a toxic metal found in rat poison in his body. He has lost all his hair and 1/2 his body weight and apparently looks like a dying cancer patient and may die. That doesn't sound like a simple case of food poisoning from sushi IMO.

Also consider that the man poisoned, Col. Alexander Litvinenko, was a former KGB agent and critic of the Kremlin or more precisely, Vladimir Putin. When Litvinenko was still well enough to talk, he said he was having lunch with an Italian contact who supposedly had information on the recent murder of Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist and another critic of Putin who was gunned down in the elevator of her apartment building.

Perhaps this is more than just a coincidence and Putin is resorting to his old ways from the Cold War and poisoning his critics. If this is the case, then this would be a good example to keep Russia from joining the WTO.

The man has highly authoritarian tendencies, however I'll wait for more to develop.

It's Authoritarianism Lite in Russia, but no one in power in the western Democracies is going to call him out on it until they put a big picture of him up in Red Square. I think only time will tell whether or not Putin's authoritarian actions are to strengthen the Russian federation, or his own power. I'm leaning towards the latter, as it takes a despot to rule a despotism--and no country without a free media can ever be free.

They were never communist. Well, that's not the point anyway. Authoritarianism is authoritarianism... Russia is still far more authoritarian than any other first-world nation.

The problem is Bush just made a deal to get the Russians in the WTO. I wonder what he traded OUR support for. You cannot negotiate with a terrorist.

I would imagine it has a lot to do with gaining access to the Russian market for the global corporations and not a whole lot to do to benefit the American people.

I saved Yuschenko's "before" and "after" photos to my hard drive. What was done to him was monstrous.

Actually Putin has already hand selected his successor. He will step down because it is the easiest way to control the elections - he is predicted to step down in March of 2008 or whatever. Before the elections and his successor will take over the remaining time period before the elections.

I think the successor named was the foreign minister. We'll see.

They've basically had one more or less continuous secret police force since the Cheka, in my understanding.
