$90 million in Cuban assets go to families of executed men
Quote: NEW YORK (CNN) -- The families of two men executed by Fidel Castro's government will receive more than $90 million in Cuban assets held in the United States, a federal judge ruled Friday.
Howard Anderson was arrested in April 1961 and accused by the Cuban government of smuggling guns to anti-Communist rebels a few days before the Bay of Pigs invasion by some 1,500 U.S.-backed expatriates.
During the attack, Cuban troops shot down two B-26 bombers operated by the CIA in support of the landing at the Bay of Pigs on Cuba's southwestern coast.
Thomas "Pete" Ray, 30, a CIA contractor, was one of four B-26 airmen killed in the attack.
Ray, a pilot with the Alabama National Guard, was shot by Cuban troops after his plane crash landed. Anderson was executed by a firing squad in the days following the invasion.
Apparently, Justice was finally served yet,
this portion seems to have opened the door to Americans being sued in a like manner.
"In 1996, Congress passed a law allowing U.S. citizens to file domestic lawsuits
against foreign countries in terrorism cases."
Could / Will this ruling open the door for foreigners to likewise sue the American Government for actions similar to actions taken by the Cuban Government in these terrorism cases ?

They can get any judgment against us that they want, but who is going to collect.
Don't you think maybe the Persians would like the Shah's loot back. They didn't get it did they. Have we ever paid Vietnam any damages? But, who are they taking the money from? I mean, whenever we make economic war on people, or whenever we say to some place like North Korea that we will hold them responsible, isn't that like holding people responsible who are not really responsible for anything? We froze Cuban assets in this country because Cuba took all the infrastructure and production owned by U.S. Citizens in that country. But he did not, exactly, take them, did he? He did give what they were declared to be worth for the sake of taxes. So, if I value my property so low as to avoid support of my society is it not fair for the government to give me what I say it is worth? And what right do we have to freeze anything. Why do we seize the common property of the very people we say we would like to free? Obviously we would give it to others before returning it whole. |
