Quote: We were a bit skeptical when we first heard of the possibility of a "premium Wii" with DVD playback coming to Japan next year -- why would Nintendo announce such a console now and risk cannibalizing their sales? Well, Nintendo, who just confirmed just such a console for both Japan and North America in 2007, is spinning it exactly so: "If DVD movie playback is so important, people can wait for the later model next year. For most consumers it'll be about the games, so they'll likely not want to wait to purchase the new system." That way nobody is bitter about a 3x sexy console mere months after the original... not like that ever happens. As much as we'd love to gripe about the current absence of this fairly common-sensical feature, and though we still can't figure out why Nintendo didn't at least figure this out as a firmware-update (they're still citing cost concerns for the current exclusion), we can't really see this standing in the way of most Nintendo fanboys and their unabated Wii lust. We suppose we'll find out soon enough.
Wii Premium
These are video game consoles.... I don't think it will affect people buying a Wii... anyone that was going to buy a Wii going to wait? |

What? It's just another model that can play DVD's?
I already have a DVD player, and an Xbox for my High-Definition. I'm getting a Wii regardless, I won't wait for this version.
The point of a game console isn't to be a DVD player, it's funny how Nintendo gave in and just threw that one out there, they didn't need to. |

I disagree Melchior. After Sony include DVD playback ability in the PS2 other console manufacturers took notice. Nintendo of course brushed this off and didn't include DVD playback ability in the GC saying it would prefer to focus on gaming only. I think if they had not done this, GC sales would have been alot higher as a result. There are alot of people out there that chose the PS2 over the GC because it could double as a DVD player as well. Alot of people don't have the money (or the interest) to buy more than one console, and their thinking falls along the lines of "Why should I buy this console that only plays games, when I can buy this one that plays games AND I can watch movies on". |

I think the PS2 and Gamecube both lost when they decided to stick with memory cards, how archaic.
One huge disappointment with the Wii so far. What the hell are you gonna do with 512MB? :? |
