Ive always wanted to tackle this problem, I see it as a problem mainly in western society. All this Alienation, Conservatism and all around "I have a stick up my A** mentality is causing all of these sexual deviancy scandals. Poor little Mark Foley wasn't taught sex by his parents, he was never able to talk about it freely with anyone at all. In face his homosexuality was completely shunned by the Republican Party.

All im saying is that maybe if people would loosen up a bit, maybe get people like this a counselor, or better yet a friend that is willling to understand and listen to they're concerns. Alienation must end, Western culture has to learn to accept other cultures and learn from them. Americans have NO culture, just because hundreds of thousands of immigrants move here every year doesn't make us a "Cultured" country.

We're an alienated, money grubbing people what we need to do is loosen up. Opinions?

Alienation is part of the human experience, not just of Western culture or American culture. It is the other side of the coin from the idea of being in a group.

I like how you have these theories about a man (Foley) who you barely know.

All im saying is that alienation is more prominent in Western culture, people are less open-minded and much more conservative. And making assumptions about a Republican Party pedophile is nothing new. If you look at the Republican Party closely you'll realise that it alienates itself, most of the inner-workings of the Republican party are run by gay men. Talk about Ironic.

Do you know anything about Eastern culture--i.e it's realities, not the romance of it? Look, for instance, at Japan. In Japan, if you don't conform you end up killing yourself (among the highest suicide rates in the world). Look at Muslim culture for another non-Western culture--homosexuals there get stoned to death in soccer stadiums....

In terms of Foley, his homosexuality was almost open. He was seen in public quite frequently with his boyfriend, and he was outed several years ago.

I'm not talking about suicide rates, im talking about alienation here. And while I concede that suicide is most likely a product of Alienation both of these countries have undergone severe almost Quasi-Fascist cultural changes a country can deal with. And to look at Japanese culture in the past, suicide has even been a way of life for many Japanese IE: Samurai. So you're really not telling me something I don't know. The Republican party however is against gays 100% yet most high-end Republicans are gay themselves, there's a good example of both Irony and Alienation my friend.

You are making the fatal flaw of coloring all Republicans by the views of the Religious Right (the fanatical conservative sect of Republicans). To claim that "the Republican party is against gays 100%" is wrong, plain and simple.

The human psyche is a leftover from the savannah, where we lived in tribes and clans; most people, who don't move around much, "know (in that they can reasonably talk to them without having to make introductory small talk) about 100-150 people; beyond this and they tend to forget names, lose contact, etc. People will always, in any large cities, suffer from a sense of alienation; it's not a natural environment for us.

bulls**t, Western Culture is the most openminded on earth.....in China homosexuality was considered a mental illness until 1993 and is still hugely suppressed and in Islamic culture gays are subject to all kinds of nasty horrors, aside from Western culture those are the 2 most prevalent cultures, so give us some credit and go watch the libertine please :)

Having lived in both a collectivist society and an individualistic society, I think there is a certain element of distinct loneliness in the Individualistic societies IMHO. Interestingly though, I prefer the individualistic society over the collectivist one because it affords more freedom and does not require conformity to rigid norms as much as the collectivist societies.

The thing with them is people often don't assert their rights [especially if you are a female/homosexual/etc] because you are seen as being selfish. So in effect, if you are a female and speak out against spousal abuse for example, sometimes it is seen as "rocking the boat" and people will treat you with contempt. Also, if you "rock the boat" by being a homosexual, etc, you are seen as bringing shame for those close to you!!!

However, on the other side, people are warm and take care of each other a lot.

I am personally so fond of individualism because I believe it leads to more innovation and freedom. On the other side, however, it also causes social problems with higher crime rates, etc because there is further distance between people.

afluence does a lot to create a more individualistic enviorment.......this is a major issue in China, as people get wealthier the less need they seem have in putting up with other people.......

another silly little "everybody needs counseling!" type of thing
opening up is crap, there are some aspects of the human psyche that need suppression, you can think about them, talk about them, but in the end they just need to be suppressed

how do i know this
if i didnt control myself and my impulses i could easily be a serial killer, some of my urges and impulses freak me the hell out
its a bunch of crap
