You're goddamn right one ought to file a complaint immediately. I've learned in life, you let dickheads like this walk all over you, and it's only going to get worse and worse.

You (Or ROM) wouldn't have been the one causing the tension. That son of a b**** neighbor caused the tension when he f****d up your (ROM's) yard/driveway.

Well, that argument by the neighbor didn't even make any sense.

I can't either Enoch. Reading ROM's post pissed me off actually.

First example you can't do anything about. Sure, the neighbor's being a dick, but it's his right to do what he wishes to the branches that cross his property line.

In the second example, I would've called the police immediately and seen what charges I could file. I would've started snapping all the pictures I could of everything that was on my property. If I could've, I would press for every charge that I legally could (destruction of property, tresspassing, etc.). THEN I would sue my neighbor in small claims court for the cost of having someone else repair everything.

But then, I'm vindictive.

Instead of suing him, you could have just given him your wife.

Tree - You were much nicer than I. As a former Realtor, I can assure you that he only has the legal right to cut the branches where they cross the property line...not to cut them off near the trunk or anywhere on your property. And as has been remarked several times here, it was very uncool of him to cut your tree at all without at least saying something to you.

Driveway - You did mostly the right thing. Pictures (even video), the police, file a complaint, and one thing that others didn't mention: Thank him for the free sand and bricks. Post an ad on Craigslist for free sand and bricks and let somebody come and get them. Don't allow him or his workers back on your land to take remove that stuff.

Vince

ps: Our neighbors moved in about a year ago and we have a tree directly on the property line. They've been very cool about it, though (and even like having the tree there. It gives us both privacy). They wanted to have a fence installed between the houses and approached us. We agreed to share the cost of the fence, and had the contractor build the fence so that it incorporated the tree. It looks great, and we're all happy.

Of course, you have to have nice neighbors for this to happen.
