Lets say i wanted to join the armed forces. But the only way I would join them is if I could start as a commanding officer, a second leuitenant in the Army or an entry level officer in the Marines.
I know I have to be Commissioned or something, I just need to know what that is.

Thats what I thought at first but according to wikipedia(see below) and the WestPoint website.

Sergeants are NCO's; which aren't really officers.
Unless you call them the officers of the enlisted ranks... |

as a commisioned officer you are "commisioned" by DoD and / or congress to do your job as an officer
a non commisioned officer is and enlisted man who is also a leader in the enlisted ranks, higher nco's are also advisors to officers, and or mentors to lower ranked officers
officers make more pay, however i find that i like the nco ranks better, there is more respect as an nco than as an officer throughout your peers |
