Lets say i wanted to join the armed forces. But the only way I would join them is if I could start as a commanding officer, a second leuitenant in the Army or an entry level officer in the Marines.
I know I have to be Commissioned or something, I just need to know what that is.
Thanks in advance |

What "commissioned" is?
Your commission is your pay. |

Thats what I thought at first but according to wikipedia(see below) and the WestPoint website.
Quote:
An officer is a member of a military or naval service who holds a position of responsibility.
Commissioned officers derive authority directly from a sovereign power and, as such, hold a commission charging them with the duties and responsibilities of a specific office or position. Commissioned officers are typically the only persons in a military environment able to exercise command (according to the most technical definition of the word) over a military unit.
Non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in positions of authority can be said to have control or charge rather than command per se, although the use of the word "command" to describe any use of authority is widespread and often official.
Having officers is one requirement for combatant status under the laws of war, though these officers need not have obtained an official commission or warrant. In such case, those persons holding offices of responsibility within the organization are deemed to be the officers, and the presence of these officers connotes a level of organization sufficient to designate a group as being combatant.

Sergeants are NCO's; which aren't really officers.
Unless you call them the officers of the enlisted ranks... |

| Thus the title NCO. But Commission is not their pay. |

as a commisioned officer you are "commisioned" by DoD and / or congress to do your job as an officer
a non commisioned officer is and enlisted man who is also a leader in the enlisted ranks, higher nco's are also advisors to officers, and or mentors to lower ranked officers
officers make more pay, however i find that i like the nco ranks better, there is more respect as an nco than as an officer throughout your peers |
