Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, i didn't really know where to post this.

I just wanted everyone's opinions on the GNF, gross national happiness. As it mentions in the article this is very unpractical from a purely economic standpoint. But should we try to make happiness one of our goals as a country, even if it could possibly hinder economic growth? |

| If the goal is just happiness, that can easily be had by simply distributing Prozac to the population. Soma, anyone? |

I am not making fun of the idea, it just seems funny because the phrase suggests a parallel with GDP which, under any school of economics, is inversely proportional to happiness. |

| I wouldn't take this article very serious folks. It's obviously written by a moron. Truthfully, the article doesn't say much at all. It doesn't discuss what this GPH is or how to implement it. And I think their idea also ties a lot more with the government then with their economy. I've thought to myself how much better it would be if the United States had a unified culture again and social norms were decided on and protected but that has little to do with the economy. It's an attitude and many products being made can represent an attitude towards social norms but it's nothing to suggest it's the economy. It's the attitude derived from the environment which has many parts to creating a loose standard of behavior. If anything, It's really the government's job to preserve a culture. And regarding the Happiness idea, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I think it's retarded to think a system under backward buddhists could possibly work in the united states. |
