i would consider having sex with a guy, but it wouldn't go any further then that.

Comrade, your post caught my attention. I think it is a very honest response (which is good to see on here) and one which I would agree with in principle.

Something many of us fail to differentiate is the physical and the emotional attraction between people and what actually makes a person gay or straight. Does having sex with someone of a certain sex make you gay/straight, or is it more of a attraction/desire, coupled with sex, that makes one gay/straight?

I personally don't think there are many totally gay or totally straight people around - most run a spectrum of sexuality.

I agree, and I too commend Comrade's honesty. :-)

Personally...I have been sexually and emotionally attracted to women in the past. However, the attraction to women is rare and not nearly as powerful as my attraction to men.

Is it really that hard to believe that there are heterosexuals that don't get a hard-on for people of the same sex? Just wondering...

That's what I'm asking.

So far I like the responses, while it would be unfair (and unsensible) of me to demand a particular answer, I'm happy that these posts are honest as I requested and help confirm my skepticism.

With the exception of Scientology, of course.

But I want to know from you, has there ever been an instance, at least once in your life, in which you found yourself genuinely smitten by someone of the same/opposite sex.?(some of the same-sex if you identify as heterosexual, and vice-versa).

I don't expect anyone to admit the truth. Heterosexuals don't want to compromise their status, and homosexuals don't want their orientation to appear the least bit non-permanent. But I can ask, and hopefully the anonymity of the Internet will encourage truthful responses.

I still don't believe anyone can be 100% one way or the other, it's unfathomable and inconsistent with every other predilection (from politics to favorite foods).

I have found, and still find many men attractive, but I have never been aroused by them. It's more of a "Damn, I wish i looked like that. Imagine how many MORE women would flock to me.. ".

i personally put it under an emotional attraction that makes someone straight or gay. sex is sex is sex, but an emotional bond is on a different level and is most times much stronger.

A gay guy told me, you're gay because you love **** (censored!?!?!! - OK, the name for a penis, starting with coc*), not because you get a friendly feeling towards someone. (Not you personally, just sayin'...)

Well, Mel, my opinion on this is going to be biased as I identify my sexual orientation as bisexual—I have strong attractions towards both sexes. I'm not going to pretend to know what is going on in other people's minds, but I do believe there is a gamut of sexuality. In fact, I started a thread on this subject not too long ago and I myself am pleased by the willingness of others to share the results of the test even by those who identify as being mainly or strictly attracted to the same/opposite sex.

While dictionaries are subject to editorial control, I think of bisexual, or the more illustrious ambisextrous, when applied to a person, as an adjective simply stating the fact that that person has urges of a sexual nature towards and lasting interest in members of both sexes. As far as urges go, there is certainly a difference between being comfortable doing something with a member of the same/opposite sex and actually receiving sexual gratification from doing it. I certainly disagree with the usage of 'ambisexual' when it is used as a noun to refer to a person because, frankly, no single feature of a person defines everything about them.

Anyway, I believe there are many people who identify strictly as heterosexual/homosexual as having interest in both sexes—that does not mean, however, that I think that is true for every person.

I can't say that I've ever been sexually attracted to another man, I've looked at other men, but it was either for comparison purposes, or for art, but there wasn't anything sexual about it.

Thanks for the contribution Æ.

I guess the issue is innately ambiguous, I don't think I did much to help with that.

Too bad I missed that test, I'll post my results in your thread.
