The Los Angeles City Council approved the award Wednesday, 11 to 1.

In his lawsuit, firefighter Tennie Pierce, 51, said after he took a bite of the meal two years ago, he noticed other firefighters laughing. He demanded to know what was in the food after a second bite but nobody answered.

Pierce said he suffered retaliation for reporting the incident and verbal slurs, insults and derogatory remarks, including taunting by firefighters "barking like dogs [and] asking him how dog food tasted," the lawsuit said.

David Wellman, a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz hired by Pierce's attorney, said the association of a black man and dog food "resonates with the deep historical roots of slavery and the corresponding dehumanization."

"It's not just silly stuff. It's racially motivated," he said.

As part of the settlement, the two captains involved were given one month off without pay, and a firefighter was ordered off work for three days without pay.

"I truly hope that my case will make a difference for African-Americans in the Los Angeles Fire Department," Pierce said in a statement.

I don't see how eating dogfood can cause 2.7 million dollars in damage.

well, normally it would have been $2.70 to replace the bad meal he ate....but since the race card was pulled he gets times 1 million hit points.

If someone is serious enough to take this case and reward someone $2.7 million from it, someone obviously needs to be removed from the judiciary system.

THis only works if it's whites playing the joke. Any other race doing it to any other race (including whites) means it's okay. You need only look at the myriad amount of organizations blatantly named for the progression of one race or another (NAACP, etc).

THe taxpayers are blind ass sheep. They'll whine about the price going up, but never demand accountability. It's a "big-city" syndrome bought on by fear of political retribution. Piss off some city worker, next thing you know..your car gets towed, you're getting pulled over all the time, building inspectors come in, etc. Not to mention those cameras that are all keeping us safe; I'm sure there have to be some executives wondering who was watching them bring that blonde into the office.

Firefighters do all kinds of stuff like this to each other. Someone saw $$$$ and went for the race card crap. If it was done to another white guy there would not have been a lawsuit. God how I hate the direction this country is going in anymore. :(

THe fact that this kind of retarded decision can actually occur in the court system is proof positive that the system is 100% corrupt and cannot be trusted to administer anything close to justice.

THe system was created by lawyers for lawyers and does nothing but line the pockets of these rich greedy bastards while the rest of society, stands by watching like idiots while they get taken to the cleaners. By the way--who do you think is going to receive most of that $2.7 million? Not the black firefighter. Most likely it will be the white lawyers who will now be able to buy their fourth porsche and hire an extra maid to dust off that marble statue in the front atrium. So much for social and racial justice.

This system is corrupt and broken and needs to be fixed. Too bad that the people would could actually fix it (the bastards in Congress) are all lawyers and have no incentive in hurting their own... It's really a huge scam and the American people are the suckers--hook, line and sinker.
