WASHINGTON Nov 8, 2006 (AP)— Republican officials said Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is stepping down. Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war.
Earlier today, a spokesman for Rumsfeld said he'd given no indication that he would step down in the wake of Democratic election gains. The spokesman said Rumsfeld would work with Congress on Iraq but added that the focus on stabilizing the country will remain the same.
In the days leading up to the election, President Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on as defense chief until the end of Bush's second term. |

In essence, Bush, once again, lied through his teeth.
Quote: Essentially Bush just admitted he lied to the press. He said last week Rumsfeld was safe, but admitted today he didn't know Rumsfeld was leaving because "he hadn't met with his replacement yet". Why did he do this? Because he didn't want to bring "politics" into the argument. I am sure the 21 troops who have died this week appreciate that.
Something else I noticed on this press conference. Bush is saying how the races were all so close, which shows a divided country. While that is true, why wasn't he saying that in 2000 and 2004 when the races were close? Instead it was "the American people showed their will".
Now just think if Bush would have replaced Rumsfeld before yesterday's elections. We could very well be looking at a different outcome today (especially in the Senate). Now the Republicans know who to thank on this.
