Bush's speach:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/3681938.stm
Someone did point out that last week, Bush stated he was to stay... Apparently it had nothing to do with the elections... nothing at all... |

| Rumsfeld has offered his resignation multiple times, always refused by the president. This resignation at last definately smacks of defeat... |

| Too little, too late - but good riddance (to put it mildly) anyway. Beware his replacement - Gates is just as bad/worse, with a much more competent and nasty history. |

| Good riddance! Rumsfeld's policies towards the military and towards the strategy to fight the actual war with Iraq, and the post-war insurgency have been terrible. It really is no wonder the military wanted him gone. |

I can bet though that he thought like that civil war commander who never held a council of war because they always voted for defeat. Now, this is a paraphrase of a general who does not even jump to mind; but those men were trained at government expense to do the impossible. And they did, and that would have been a great place to stop if you had it as a goal. When they should have disengaged, declared victory, and backed off they did not. They were all very wrong to atomize the enemy. They were very wrong trying to control the cities. And the effort to get behind any government not thrown up by the people themselves was purely stupid. Worst of all, was to use a defensive arm of the people, our sword, our shield, and our buckler for an offensive purpose without doing the long, hard, and demanding duty of building a consensus to do the thing no matter how many lives it cost nor dollars nor time. I do not believe there was ever a hope of consensus, but the effort to build one might have saved the nation from this mistake. The guy blasted us in there, got us pinned down, and then says we can't leave. Watch us. If we leave, Iraq will find other friends, and it will prove what they have been saying is correct, that we are hollow, and cannot sustain an attack. The fact is that no society has ever been able to support empire except at the cost of their own liberty. Empires and Emperors go together. I don't think we are quite ready for that. |
