Some GIs I know where telling me about the culture of homosexuality in the ME (Afghanistand and Iraq specifically). Word has it that women are for mating, and boys and men are for pleasure. They refer to it there as "same-same".
Can anyone confirm this? |

| I have no idea about that, but I'm pretty sure that's how it went down in ancient Rome/Greece. That's all I have to add :P |

I can't confirm it, but I have heard the same thing. I talked to a GI that said an Iraqi told him he was cute and that women were for making babies and that boys are for fun.
I personally enjoy women and have no attraction to men, but whatever hydrates your camel. |

My best friend is Arabic, his parents moved here from Palistine years ago. He's a huge conservative and doesn't like most the Arabs over there. He's told me on numberous occasions that a lot of them in fact do participate in "same-same" act, all the while talking about how much they hate the western world for allowing gays to be open. Like I said before he's a huge conservative so I'm sure he not going to paint them in a good light, but he wouldn't just make this stuff up. |

| I'm given to wonder if this might be due in part to the sexes being traditionally more segregated from each other than one sees in the west. |

I too have heard this from some friends in the service and from a few books I've read. From what I understand it's quite prevalent in Afghanistan in particular. |

Did they say anything about Thursdays being special? |

I was wondering how intimate a man could be with someone he viewed as being so inferior. |

Not that I can remember. I have heard Thursday referred to as "Little Friday" in some countries, so maybe it's a party night there as well. |

Physical intimacy doesn't require emotional/psychological intimacy. |

It's also prevalent in Malaysia and Pakistan as well; apparently, the men get around it as a moral issue by claiming that it's just 'fooling around' and thus not really sex.
It is a serious issue, given the rise of AIDS in those nations. |

I think I agree with Tono here; treating someone as an inferior and degrading them creates a relationship devoid of intamacy regardless of whether or not they have sex. |

The Spartans would often not even see eachother in day light -- husband and wife that is -- since they did not want the man falling in love and not wanting to fight and die. The women were for making babies, but a man needs some release, doesn't he? I am sure this is true but to what extent I do not know. It would be interesting to know, although I'm sure it would be painted as devil lies from the great satan. |

Let me explain since I have written an academic paper on the topic:
First, a caution: let's not generalize here. This behaviour is only prevalent within certain sections of men in those societies that is by no means representative of the society at large. The common mistake is to believe that whoever is from that region behaves this way.
Within the Middle East, the sexes are segregated in most areas of life. They have little contact with each other and outside marriage, they can't have any relationship with one another. This repression has caused odd behaviours with respect to sexuality. This is especially a problem in Afghanistan where the society has essentially collapsed on itself.
Now, one thing you have to understand is that much of this is done by straight men who do NOT have sex with other men [of their own level and standing] there. Men only have sex with boys and effeminate men because firstly, they can dominate them in the relationship and secondly, they believe having sex with boys and effeminate men does not take away anything from their masculinity since they are the active partners [usually the one penetrating during the sexual intercourse].
Interestingly, one of the weird aspects of this behaviour is that American soldiers are sometimes solicited for sex by the local men because the American soldiers appear effeminate to them with their exotic looks!
Overall, it is a bit strange for people who have not lived in a sexually segragated society and I don't expect many to understand it. Lastly, I once again caution not to generalize.

Essentially, this type of sex is solely for sexual gratification and it doesn't require intimacy. It's a physical act. |
