Do you believe dreaming is random image generations taken from your memory to keep you entertained while you sleep?

Or do you think that dreams have some deeper meaning?

Could it be you subconscious mind trying to tell you something, using images from your memory?

I like to look to my dreams for artistic inspiration. But lately, they been filled with mundane things like school et cetera.

EDIT: Sorry if this is the wrong forum. I was stuck between philosophy and the lounge.

The question you pose is so enormous that I dont think anyone can truly wrap their head around it... however, Freud tried.

I'll do my best...

In short, dreams are a sequence of visualisations that hold as representations of the dreamers hopes, fears, wants, insecurities, and basicaly ANYTHING that has EVER occupied his / her mind. The important thing to remember, is that while you and others can decypher some of it, the part that you cant can only be deciphered by yourself as only you know what expressions you assosiate with what imagery. As to what dream you have on a particular night, it is decided for you through your subconcious. Only you know what concious visual stimuli you associate with what memoreis or expressions. When Freud first started analyzing his dreams he found memories that had presented themselves from childhood, that he conciously forgot untill he tried to understand his dreams.

I had a dream I was running from my high school varsity team, met a woman, she hid me, married me, then we killed the varsity team. Which would make sense if I hated the football team, except I was friends with about half the team.

Therefore, I must conclude that I want to go watch The Island.

dreams are nothing more then your brain piecing together recent experiences. sort of like scrapbooking, except every single one of your pictures got glued onto the same page.

I can tell you without a doubt and most certainty that dreams are not intended to entertain you.

I have no desire to be entertained, I am aware of that, agree with it, and live that way. Yet I still dream.

So that should knock one hole in the theory for ya.

Best of luck on this one.

Does that mean all dreams are messages from your subconcious?
or just that some are?

your subconcious and concious exist at the same time... things pass between them on a constant basis... ie: you walk by a dog, your subconcious triggers a childhood memmory that has nothing to do with dogs... it happens every time you walk by a dog, and you cant explain why... the connection your subconcious is making is hidden from your concious, but its there...

Dreams are the same way... they pull things from both subconcious and concious memmory and thought, and are one of those rare places where you can see why something like a dog is linked to a childhood memmory not having anything to do with dogs... perhaps you have the memmory because your father was extremely hairy and when you were a kid, for just 2 seconds, you thought he was doglike... ? ... see what I mean.
