| I have quite a few long guns, but really no place to shoot since I have yet to find a local range that is more than 75 yards. So I have been moving more towards pistols for plinking. I have a few already, but am looking for a top of the line shooter in 40 or 45 cal. . Any suggestions? |

Get a Glock 19.
Or, if you want to hold on to the idea that the bullet matter more than your ability to hit the target, an XD-45 or Sig 220. |

| I have become a convert to the ParaOrdinance LDA weapons. Robust, yet as compact as you want them to be, I am a huge fan of their LDA system. It takes all the great, reliable features of the proven 1911 system and puts it in a modern package that has to be fired to be believed. My Para Cary 7.45 LDA is one of the best compact pistols I have ever owned. Smooth as butter and accurate - especially considering the 3 1/2 inch barrel length. I am saving toward a full sized model ASAP. I own and have owned a lot of pistols - Glocks, SiGs, Colts, S&W, HK, Ruger, etc...I have bought and sold many - this one's a keeper. My Glock 22 sits virtually unused. |

I second this. My Glock 19 is rarely off my hip. It's my favorite pistol by far. Plus the 33-round mags you can get for them are fun. |

I'm looking at a ( used ) Reeder custom 1911 at the local gun shop. I've never owned a 1911 of any make( except for an old, P.O.S, Star. The Reeder customs are pretty expensive So I wonder if any of you have any input on these guns or possibly another 1911 custom rig. |

| Personally, I'd like a C96 Mauser. It's old, and cumbersome: but it's a classic! For a more practical gun I'd want a Colt 1911 Witness: Also a classic, but smaller and with more plentiful ammunition available. |

I like 1911s. They, like the Garand, symbolize American shooting. I think every American who is even remotely interested in firearms should get one.
But, i think the Glock 19 is the epitome of the fighting pistol. It's the finest combat handgun ever manufactured. Maybe not in ergonomics, but, for what it lacks in "feel", it makes up for in durability, ruggedness, and reliability. Your Glock will fire EVERY time you pull the trigger, whether it's the 100th round, or 50,000th round. I don't know a single 1911 that can say the same. |

There are too many needs that would fit a different pistol. the Glock 19 is for pure reliability - the only thing more reliable is probably a Colt 6 shooter.
If I had the choice to get anything, I'd probably get a custom Wilson Combat .45, though the info on ParaOrdinance is interesting.
I just recently shot a Desert Eagle in .44 mag which was nice but not practical. For a carry, I like the new Kimbers... |

If you're looking to just punch holes in paper, a 1911 is fine. |

I like my 45s. Simple. Straight from the factory. No modifications except for sights. Almost any factory 45 will shoot better than most shooters. I picked up a Springfield cheapo 1911 and I also have a custom tuned P12 Paraord. Suprised the heck out of me when the cheapo Springfield was just as reliable and accurate as the custom gun. |

My 1911 have never jammed with factory ammo and new springs. I'll shoot 1000s of rounds, when I get 2 or 3 jams per 100, time to change the springs, and problem dissapears. |

The hands down documented most reliable pistol is an USP HK. There is no other pistol that has survived the same endurance test. Glocks and Barretas have survived army torture tests, but only HK has tested beyond the army tests. No other companies want to try to test thier pistols like HK, it is too expensive to try. |

| Another chime-in away from Glock and toward ParaOrdinance. I have literally 10,000 rounds downtown through my Glock 22. Most were in .40 S&W, but last year, I converted to .357 Sig. It's an awesome pistol - truly, but does not hold even a faint candle to my ParaOrdinance. It also does not even come close to my HK P7M8. Find a range that rents guns. Fire 2 mags through a Glock - then fire 2 mags through a ParaOrdinance 12.45 LDA. You will quickly learn which pistol is superior in every way and it won't be black and start with the letter "G"... :) The FBI doesn't issue them for no reason... |

A local range has two glocks that are at 100,000 rounds each, completely stock. That is, with their original springs.
The recoil spring's life in a Glock is said to be ~50,000 rounds, on average. |
