Just a quick question: in general, would e-commerce be considered part of industry or services?
While theoretically it could be split up into more than those two groups, how could one categorize it as a whole? |

| Huh? I'm far from being an economist but it seems to me like the internet is just another market, like a mall or something, maybe e-commerce itself is just a term for transactions that take place in that market? |

In which case I'd be inclined to call it a part of industry. |

Correct. The internet is a CHANNEL, through which both goods and services can both be sold. |

why call it a 'channel'? Why use a metaphor? It is a means of communication, just like the phone, just like TV - and all forms of communication allow the trade of goods and services to be exchanged through them. It is mere a means of communication - using a 'channel' as a metaphor (although it makes one sound edumuckated and somewhat knowledgeable) is too restrictive because the internet is used for more than just trade. |

Because "channel" is the correct term.
This is Marketing 101 - Product, Price, Promotion, Channels of Distribution.

The OP was talking specifically about eCommerce. Obviously the internet is used for more than trade. |
