Quote: Celebs Who Claim They're Green but Guzzle Gas

Hybrid cars are all the rage in Hollywood. Celebrities drive them like they're a badge of honor. You save a few gallons of gas, you save the planet. Right? Well, not when you hop on a private jet and burn enough fuel to propel NASCAR through 2050.

Of course, the stars need to go here and there. The location shoots, the fabulous vacations, etc. But that's why God created United Airlines. G-IV's, on the other hand, were created in the image of precious celebs.

Julia Roberts

On the ground: Roberts drives a Prius, which gets (at best) 60 miles to the gallon, shaving 30 miles off a normal car's mpg.
In the air: Chicago/LA, 1,749 miles in a private jet, the route she took with Rupert Everett while shooting "My Best Friend's Wedding."
Gas guzzled: 2,100 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius Penance: Julia would have to drive 30,000 miles, or roughly once around the earth and then some to even out her consumption in the air.
So Julia says: No word yet from Julia's rep.

Jennifer Lopez

On the ground: J-Lo tools around in her 60 miles-per-gallon Prius.
In the air: LA /New York, 2,475 miles in a private jet. Lopez was actually sued by a private jet company for allegedly skipping out on the bill, though she says it's all a misunderstanding and she was not supposed to be billed.
Gas guzzled: 2,750 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance: She'd have to drive 45,000 miles, and that's a lot longer for Jenny than just going down the block. It's actually more like twice around the earth.
So Jennifer says: There was no comment from Lopez's rep.

George Clooney

On the ground: George favors a Tango, an electric car that gets a whopping 135 miles to the charge.
In the air: Los Angeles/Tokyo, 5500 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled: 7,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Electric shocker: Even with his super-saver Tango, he'll have to drive over 57 oceans -- Pacific Oceans to break even.
So George says: Clooney's rep, publicist Stan Rosenfield, tells TMZ, "You clearly have no understanding of certain people's need for private transport," and points out that Clooney often has "no control" over his travel schedule.

Brad Pitt

On the ground: Eco-champ Brad is yet another Prius-lover, and he reportedly has several hybrids in his stable.
In the air: Los Angeles/Namibia, 9,400 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled: 11,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance: Brad burned enough fuel to take a Prius to the moon.
So Brad says: Pitt didn't have any comment. His rep tells TMZ that Pitt is out of the country.

And the true-blue Green Award goes to ... Leo DiCaprio.

On the ground: Leo drives a Toyota Prius
In the air: Leo flies just like us folk -- commercial, unless he positively must fly private because of scheduling.
Prius penance: None.

Hats off to Leo!

The others, just more of the same, do what I say, not what I do..

Attempting to be seen as helping the environment is a fad, just like apple iPods or anything else. It's not just celebrities who are attempting to be seen as being eco-friendly. Corporations are getting on the deal as well. The best example of this is Royal Dutch/Shell, which has commercials outlining how they are attempting to return the environment into normal after they've molested and raped it of its resources. Which is all bogus, because the amount of money they spend on community relations, and kicking people out of their homes becuase they happen to live on a large deposit of oil is insignificant to the amount of pollution they create in just getting the oil out of the ground.

However, perhaps its better that they are at least trying to do something about the pollution problem, rather than drive their Hummers to the local conveniance store.

Yes, I think that is the rub with this issue, and perhaps pervades into MANY MANY issues.

Is it better to be hypocritical and at least TRY and do good, or to not bother to do good at all?

I guess at least these people are using their celeb status to put out there that it's "cool" to be green-friendly, which likely appeals to many Americans. As long as they weren't trying to be "in your face" about it, although it seems like Clooney for one certainly is.

Yeah, upon more thought, the true wrong WOULDN'T be that they were doing some things "green" and not others, BUT IF they were trying to tell others to to be green and then flying to china to buy a sandwich.

I like the part about Cloony not having 'control' over his travel schedual.

But in contrast, until they make a jetliner or private jet that gets 60 miles to the gallon the arguement over a car vs. a plane is rhetorical.

No, like Leo, they could fly commercial.

As that would save the environment ever further than to travel alone? I don't remember commercial airliners producing less exhaust than that of a car or a private jet even. It is like apples and oranges, while they both produce enviornmental hazards, there is a whole ballpark between the two as they are both simply fruit.

Compairing a jetliner/private jet to a car is a tough one if you ask me.

1. If you had to fly how would you be able to control the production of environmental hazards? By going commercial or solo? The point is you cannot.

2. When driving a car do you have a choice of control of the production of environmental hazards. Yes.

Car vs Plane = rhetorical.

It is the same with the whole sudden interest in green issues I'm sorry to say. Our politicians talk about doing this and doing that, carbon trading etc, but they actually mean nothing. It is all a load of hollow crap and the only people who really still are Green are the radicals who have been supporting the Green cause for years now.

I pay no attention to anything the government says. Rather than take the lead and actually bring laws into action to force change, they are are more interested in scoring cheap political points than action.

It is sad to say it, but we won't change until it is too late, maybe we are seeing the ultimate destructive human instinct in force. Our fight to seperate and become independent from the natural world is something I have long opposed.

We all have to face it. To really change events and the destruction we cause we have to do alot more than just tax air travel and recycle a little rubbish. We have to fundamentally change the way we consume resources and harness the natural forces in the world.

It's the same premise behind public transportation. It reduces polution by reducing the number of vehicles in motion.

Former Vice President Al Gore appeared in Berkeley on Monday to lend his celebrity and reputation as a crusader against global warming to a measure on California's Nov. 7 ballot that would tax oil companies to raise $4 billion for green energy projects.

``I'm here to change peoples' minds on the climate crisis and to support Prop 87,'' Gore called to a group of reporters after he emerged from the ``100 miles per gallon'' Toyota Prius that brought him to a noontime rally in a sun-drenched park behind Berkeley's City Hall.

His motorcade also included three motorcycles, two limousines and a Dodge Ram 1500 light duty truck.

Shouldn't he preach by giving good example?

Gore is just one of an army of tireless soldiers that fly all around the world preaching the evils of gas guzzling autos. Greens don't realize that it is the WEALTH of our society that allows them to enjoy their lifestyles.

No, it is the lack of balance that is the true criminal.

Do you believe in the environmental cause, or is it just another bunch of commie hippies? :hip:

Good I'm wrong, let's turn it around on you there.

f**k Gore, you know the real Greens mean something........and in a two party state they are saying something. Just cause the Green cause is gaining momentum doen't mean that the origins are somehow flawed.............................or shall we talk about industrialist failures that end up as presidents. "Oh, I don't like it, but I sure like the way our governor stages an execution"................

Alarm....................wakeup........................your ignorance was only a dream............................................................

I remember a few years ago, when Hannity was blasting Arianna Huffington for her gas-guzzling limo, and John Kerry for his gas-guzzling SUV, and what does Hannity drive? An Escalade.
