The Golden Rule is the closest thing I have to such a code. Though, fundamentally, to treat others as I wish to be treated is to basically be left alone to do as I please.

There's a reason chivalry is dead. Not to rag on anyone's deeply held beliefs, but personally, I think any system which advocates the treatment of women as weak or by nature in need of a man's assistance or special favor is insulting. I'm no radical feminist--in fact, they piss me off, a lot. But I agree with them that the chivalric ideal is simply the relic of a centuries-old code that held women to be inferior beings in need of masculine protection... and therefore, I think it's wrong.

Depends on where you are. Upper middle class suburbia is a place where there is not much need for male protection for females, many areas aren't that fortunate, Even in the USA and other modern countries there are many places where females are vulnerable. In maost parts of the world an unattached woman has extremely limited survival options.

This is objective reality. Having an idealized view of how things are can get you killed or worse.

People tend to ridicule people who are idealised ive found, however sad that is.... :(

And the word "honour" tends to be laughed at too sadly.

I dont know why, but its a sad thing our culture (British) has evolved from a culture where people are more worried about getting caught doing bad things than they are ashamed that they have done them.

I have a friend who was walking in Egypt by herself. For a woman to walk in public without escort there are considered to be prostitutes. She couldn't figure out why she was being offered so many rides!

I went to Egypt, it was an interesting place, very differenet from England.

However much people go on about how money makes them happy, the amount of chronically poor people we met in Egypt are, on the whole, a lot happier with their lives than we are in our consumerist, gadget rich society.

Made me wonder anyway.

Personaly i stick closer to a loose bushido, because of the balance it offers in general. I think chivalry is better than nothing but we have to remeber that society tends to swing from one extreme to another, in Rome women were inferior, the middle ages put women on a pedastal, the 17-early 20th century lowered womens status once more, then came the womens movement, where women gained rights, so as far as that goes chivalry is a litte outdated. I think a code of honor is important, it keeps people acting civilized (civilized of course being a relative term) but its when honor becomes too important that we run into problems. I believe it was Aristotle that said to every virtue there are two affiliated vices, one marked by the lack of that virtue, and the other marked by the excess of it.

thats why i try to fallow both because they form a balance between the two extreme.
