Skilling gets 24 years
Ex-Enron CEO sentenced for his role in the grand-daddy of corporate frauds.
By Shaheen Pasha, CNNMoney.com staff writer
October 23 2006: 7:25 PM EDT

HOUSTON (CNNMoney.com) -- Former Enron Chief Executive Jeffrey Skilling, who gained infamy as the man who orchestrated the largest corporate fraud in history, was sentenced to more than 24 years in jail Monday.

The 52-year-old Skilling stood stoically, his hands clasped before him, as presiding Judge Sim Lake handed down his sentence. His wife Rebecca, however, sobbed quietly in her seat as victims of Enron's collapse watched the proceedings stone-faced.

More on Enron...

Speaking to reporters outside of the courthouse, Skilling said he was disappointed by the judge's sentence but was hopeful that "if we review this in a calmer atmosphere," the appellate judges may find in his favor.

Skilling and his attorneys have maintained that he couldn't receive a fair trail in Houston - the epicenter of Enron's implosion. "I'm not happy about it but I believe deep down - and this is not an act - I believe I am innocent," he asserted.

Enron on Trial
Judge Lake ordered Skilling to remain on house arrest until the Bureau of Prisons determined his date of incarceration. He denied the government's motion for Skilling to be taken into custody immediately.

In addition, Judge Lake denied defense attorney Daniel Petrocelli's request to lower the sentence by 10 months in order to allow Skilling to serve his sentence at a lower security- level penitentiary.

Instead, Lake recommended that Skilling served his sentence at a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in Butner, N.C.

When someone robs someone of say $50 and gets caught they go right to jail, this guy steals people lifes savings and gets to go home until a date is set for his incarceration and he gets to go to a Federal prison, thats is of course he dosen't take a boat ride to his island somewhere in one of the oceans.

Well, if he wasn't responsible for the downfall of one of the largest companies in the country, costing hundreds of people their life savings....he wouldn't be in that position, now would he?

Quoted for truth.

Most have already outlived their money while it should be clearly the opposite. Some sold all they had not to stay rich but to eat.

Good. p***k deserves what he gets. Does anyone know how much of his ill gotten gains his family gets to keep? Personally I'ld like to see them destitute.

I've got no sympathy for any of these people. I lost $5,000 due to the Worldcom fraud.

I don't believe in the death penalty, but he should be thrown into a normal prison where the other prisoners may bring him to justice.

I know, but they're all the same in my book. Lock em up and make them forfeit all their assets. Crap drug dealers loose all their assets, the same should be done of white collar theft. To me the white collar crime is worse, it is out and out theft for finacial gain, drug dealers are at least providing a product for those who want it.

article wrote: To ensure that criminals do not benefit financially from their illegal acts, federal law provides that profits from drug-related crimes, as well as property used to facilitate certain crimes, are subject to forfeiture to the government. Since drug trafficking is a crime of greed, asset forfeiture is an effective weapon because it removes the profit from such illegal activities.

Well. 3years ago Dubya ordered the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

In the first 18 months of the Iraqi war, 100,000 Iraqi civilians were precision bombed to pieces, mostly women and children.

And Dubya is still the immaculate American, born-again moralist whio assumes that any-one who's is not for him is un-patriotic.

How many families did Lay/Skilloing "killed" ?

The Commander in Chief is immune from prosecution, and Congress (all members of his party for the most part) would have to impeach him, which they will not because our corporations wouldn't like that, and nor would their Lobbyi$t$. Skilling's sentence is a start. I'd love to see alot more of these immoral bastards behind bars on their knees for Bubba.

Thats what you get when your greed costs people their jobs, and nest egg, and ends up getting the former employees black-balled for something they didn't do.
