|
|
Whenever I try to view streaming media either in Real Player form (*.RAM) or Windows Media (*.WMV), my internet connection dies. For Windows media, this is true even if I open it using WinAmp instead of Windows Media player.
I managed to find the problem with Realplayer streaming media by re-downloading the latest version of Realplayer, except I've already got the latest version of Windows Media player and the codec, so what's the deal? And even if my codec and player were outdated, why would it KILL my internet connection?
Basically, my internet just dies. I can't access any websites or even my router. Resetting the network connection just give me the Windows message, "The network is connected, but there is limited or no connectivity," and I still can't access the net. So, I need to unplug my router for a few secs, then plug it back in.
Any ideas on WTF is wrong and what I can do? |

It's probably your firewall. Open the correct ports. |

That's not it. Windows Media Player and Realplayer, to my knowledge, don't need a port opened to work. But just to check that, I opened all of my ports, and still had the same problem with Windows Media player. |

The first thing I would do is a reinstallation of WMP. Roll it back to the earliest version you can (go to Add/Remove Programs, make sure "Show updates" is checked at the top, and uninstall Windows Media Player 10 under Windows XP - Software Updates). Then go to http://update.microsoft.com, run the Custom update, and reinstall Windows Media Player 10. If that doesn't work, then try searching around the Microsoft Knowledgebase...
Based on the info, I'm not sure if it's a software issue or a hardware issue (though chances are that it's software). You do need to open ports for certain UDP streams, though, so also try connecting your computer directly to the internet (not through the router), turn off your firewall, and then try a stream again. Make sure if you have an anti-virus program that has a firewall, that it is disabled as well as the Windows Firewall. If it works, then it's a firewall issue. (Don't leave your computer unprotected on the Internet like that for very long.) |
