| There are plausible applications for the future of this technology other than the obvious military benefits of a working cloak. Colonization, for example. Science Fiction has long used the idea of terraforming and colonizing Mars. However, because of its virtually nonexistant magnetic field, Mars cannot maintain a viable atmosphere due to solar winds. A device created along simiar lines to the one just invented could concievably shield a planet's surface from solar radiation, thus allowing terraforming. Imagine using this technology to shield sunlight in the Sahara, creating a more temperate climate. you know that hole in the ozone everyone's so worried about? With this technology, maybe we could plug it. |

But it's interesting if they could finally tweek it into complete invisibility.
Unfortunately, complete invisability will be extremely difficult to attain, if not impossible. Dealing with the entire spectrum of visable light all at once is the cause of that problem. And actually getting to the point where viable light can be redirected, is also extremely difficult. They will need to make the parts of their cloaking mechanism about 60,000 times smaller. That means that sections of the device will be measure at several hundred nanometers, instead of one or two centimeters, as it is now.

That is a great application that I never thought of before. Unfortunately, getting from cloaking visible light to high energy waves will probably be along the dificulties of getting from microwaves to visible light.
The concept behind the idea is not hard at all. But the actual application is extremely difficult. |
