At death the only thing that dies is the body. The soul of man is eternal and is freed from the body at death.

Where and how the soul prepares for its next lifetime very much depends on where it left off in its last life.

The soul following the patterns of nature, journeys along a path of birth, maturation, death and then renewed opportunity of rebirth.

East started meeting West when western thinkers started thinking outside the box and in the last century and had to admit that reincarnation made at least as much sense as a doctrine of a one-shot chance before heaven or hell. The 20th century philosopher physician Albert Schweitzer is one such thinker: "Reincarnation contains a most comforting explanation of reality by means of which Indian thought surmounts difficulties which baffle the thinkers of Europe."

Nothing.
Absolutley nothing. No eternal blackness. And no conciousness of empty space for eternity.
you die, and along comes your soul, brain, and body into your adventure.
of death that is.
It's funny to believe that there is some higher power. Where is any proof. At some point in time, someone had to make it up. It spread because everyone needs SOMEONE to blame their sorrows on, to praise when the have accomplished something, and to lean on when there is nothing else there for them. Our human emotions and basic instincts led us to believe in the higher powers, when there cant be such a thing.
It's depressing
but it is the truth
of course... its my truth. I respect all religions and grew up a christian myself.

Eh?

I find NOT believing there is a higher power quite insane myself. But I also find the religions of the world (Christianity, Hinduism, etc etc) to be insane.

As for what happens after death. As Vsimicus said, nothing.

The chances of the earth forming as it did are the same as picking up a single piece of marked sand in the Saharan dessert, the chances of mankind spontaneously evolving are the same as picking out the same marked piece of sand three times in a row. Any one that says there is no benevolent higher power has never seen the sun set over the ocean, has never seen the grand Tetons mountain range at sunset, has never marveled at the beauty of a newborn child, has never seen a man told he was never going to walk again stand for the first time. It is impossible to see the beauty of the world and not believe in a higher power, I don't care what you call it, god, Allah, Buddha, the flying spaghetti monster it does not matter, i feel sorry for those that cannot see that.

I do. Religion is almost always dangerous. The only one that isn't inherently dangerous (as far as I can tell) is Deism.

Yes it is. It instills false values into people which they will try and make into law.

India and Hinduism being a prime example of how religion harms society.

I'll find out when I got there. If some magical god rejects me for not accepting him, then all the other intelligent people and I can go hang out in hell.

Might I also add that there is nothing more embarrasing than realizing you made a grammatical mistake while calling yourself intelligent. Wow.

I've been thinking about my mortality lately and one of the things that concerns me about dieing is, besides being dead, is what happens in that first hour or so. Like when you start a new job or remember the feeling of starting in a new school. That feeling of uncertainty. Is there an orientation phase when you die? Do family members greet you and show you the ropes? One thing is for sure though, we will ALL know that answer sooner or later. Hopefully later.
