That is amazing. We have more but save less.
Predominantly because many people have:
A. Bought much huger houses in expensive suburbs when compared with the 1960s - that leaves less disposable income
B. Filled those big houses with many more appliances and electronics and other furnishings than in 1960s, and spending plenty to heat and cool the places.
Also contributing to a lesser extent:
C. More two-car households with cars that cost a lot more per mile to operate and that have to be driven more
D. Higher out-of pocket health care costs, and increased demand for increasing number of available health care services |

Why didn't you post median household income? Also you get more information if you post in 5-year increments because you can see that it has been dropping since 2000.
