| Despite numerous commercials stating the opposite, there's very little to suggest inhaling second hand smoke as you walk passed somebody is any less harmfull than getting a whiff of exhaust from a large truck. Smoking does not effect anyone but smokers. My grandmother lived with my grandfather (a heavy smoker, two packs a day) for 32 years, and is as healthy as ever. No heart problems, no cancer, no emphesema. None of that. I have a feeling she's not the only one. You non smokers b**** about how much it inconveiniences you, but does it really? I live right outside of Exxon, I have to wash my car every two days to prevent the fallout from destroying the clear coat, I smell all kinds of nasty smells, all day every day. To say that second hand smoke is a legitamate health hazard is comical to me. And whats with bringing up abortion? There's a whole forum for that, so take it somewhere else. |

| I am against smoking being banned on purely private property, or in the open in public. If a business owner wants to allow smoking in his business, it is his property, and his prerogative to do so. If people don't like it, they don't have to go there. If it negatively affects his business, he will change his policy; if not he will in all likelihood maintain it. Laws which ban smoking in private facilities are a violation of the right to his property of the owner. I can undertand restrictions in public buildings, thoguh; public meaning buildings owned by the public, although I can honestly care less. |

OK..so if someone wants to commit suicide, the cops should stand back and leave them blow their brains out? |

If someone was gonna actually commit suicide they'd do it without involving the police or causing a scene, someone who drew the attention of the police deserves to get beaten up because they probly are just crying out for help.
And Kamel, I was joking, hence the :P : P : p : p : P
I don't see how theyre going to enforce this anyway, maybe it will be like this "quick someones getting stabbed, oh wait, whats that, holy crap theyre smoking in public and theres an innocent bystander next to them who doesnt want to move and doesnt like the smoke, lets get him" |

| Ok, I was thrown off by the "its not like others are forced to breathe in the smoke" Non smokers love the sarcasm, and sarcasm doesn't transfer well in the typed word. |

| Smoking kills. In a society with national health care banning public smoking only makes sense. The alternative is to disqualify smokers from publically funded health care which probably wouldn't go over too well. |

| So does drinking alcohol, but you won't see a liquor ban any time soon. |

Behold, the trifecta of preconceived notions Americans have about the French: Smoke cigarettes, Rude, and Dirty. I can't say I blame them much considering what the average Frenchman thinks about Americans. Ignorance and cheap unfounded generalizations abound on both sides of the Atlantic.
Indeed. I'll toss in that during my stays in France I didn't notice any differences in terms of smokiness, dirtiness, or rudeness from anywhere else...well except for the general sense of disdain I get everytime I hand anyone my passport, but thats true everywhere.
In my state smoking has been banned in restaurants, bars, and even within certain distances of building entrances for years. Has worked out fine thus far, although those of us who insist on sucking toxic fumes into our lungs are slightly inconvenienced. |

The French will stop being rude the exact moment American tourists stop being retarded jackasses.
When a man who can't speak French walks into a French public library expecting to be able to buy a hotdog with American money, there are only so many possible reactions.
I'll point out that unless they are shown ID there is no way a frenchman could tell the difference between a canadian and american. Hell, most of us cant even tell each other apart. The only thing seperating Canada and the US is a great big long imaginary line. |

I couldn't agree more. There is nothing worse than trying to walk into a store and having to walk through a blue haze of smoke, just to buy a loaf of bread.
I smoked for years, and would never infringe upon the rights of a smoker to smoke in their own home, but when you smoke somewhere where I have to breathe it in, and where my family has to breathe it in, I'm going to complain.
I am glad that NY has the smoking ban indoors, because I can go into a restaurant and have dinner without choking down cigarette smoke. However, smokers shouldn't stand right outside the door and smoke there, either. I never did it. It's common courtesy. |
