What is going on here?
I don't think I understand this logic considering France's continuing lean towards the extreme left in their political views, and individual rights is something that the French value exteremly highly.
Quite frankly, I think it's stupid. The ban doesn't include streets, so what's the point? It's just encouraging people to go outside? |

This is happening all over the place - all over Europe (we have a similar law in England coming into force) and I understand that New York has had one for some years.
It's rubbish, IMO - but there it is. However, it's nothing to do with France alone. |

| New York has had a ban yeah. From what I understand it's actually pretty cool if you're a non-smoker, because you don't have to worry about being right next to the smoking section despite technically being in the non-smoking section and stuff like that. Smokers hated it but they got over it. It didn't really result in many people giving up smoking though. |

How is this considered Nanny state, when you smoke around someone you are potentialy infringing on someone elses right.
I have no problem with this ban. |

How is this considered Nanny state, when you smoke around someone you are potentialy infringing on someone elses right.
I have no problem with this ban. It's not just smoking, its the entire idealism of banning things or requirements of safety standards that goes far beyond the statistical probability. One day we are all going to wake up and freedom is going to be a memory. |

Yup, good point.
It's almost as if now, the onus is on us to prove why we should be able to do something, and otherwise the status quo is to ban it.

This is something that has concerned me for a while myself. Things like banning our online gambling snap me back to worrying about it. |

I feel the same way. I'm happy to be breathing more clean air than usual, but as much as I can't stand rude smokers that care only for themselves and their filthy habit...it's NEVER the government's job to say what you can and can't do for your health. If people were more courteous and disposed of their litter properly and didn't blow smoke in the faces of others..they'd be a lot more tolerant. The government on the other hand..give them an inch, and they'll take 50 miles.
Paintball guns, canned CO2, pellet pistols/rifles/airsoft guns..it's all banned here now. I can buy 12ga shotshells at the store still though, so that's *kind of* a plus, I suppose. |

As soon as I read they were trying to do that months ago, I was furious. Once they got it to the point of signing last week, I was in a rage. But it really scared me a little actually. Sometimes I don't think anything is safe. I planned to bet on some upcoming fights in UFC and Pride Fighting literally within the next couple months. Now that is probably impossible. As I understand it, the law was attached to something else entirely unrelated. How the hell does that even make sense. But the odd thing of it is to me, this goddamn law literally just doesn't make any sense. It's like they want to take something away, for no reason other than to take it away.

Of course it is. But then, the online gambling law simply doesn't make sense. Someone is getting their pockets lined, and so put it under a banner of "protecting people from themselves"
After all...if someone else goes into dept because they never grew up and learned how to manage money like an adult...why, that is my fault of course!
As far as smoking, I have always hated it, but again, I have never been in favor of a ban for it in public places because the public belongs to everyone. I don't think second hand smoke can possibly be good for anyone, but there is great debate on the legitimacy of the studies claiming how damaging it really is. The point is, taking more money away from people or throwing them in jail is not the answer. (I don't think anyone woudl go to jail for smoking in public, but I'm sure they would be be able to if some cop really wanted to be an **** about it) |

It is already banned in indoor public places, in the Republic of Ireland since 2004.
Everybody there is perfectly happy with the ban.
