France's President Jacques Chirac appears to have eased the world's political pressure on Iran over its suspect nuclear programme.

did anyone notice the international shift?

In a radio interview before departing for the UN General Assembly session in New York, Mr Chirac said: "I am never in favour of sanctions."

He called Iran "a great nation", and suggested that in the course of future talks the six leading nations now engaged with Iran on the nuclear dossier would renounce the threat of UN sanctions and Iran would renounce uranium enrichment.

His comments may reflect a growing belief among European leaders that persuading Iran to drop its troublesome nuclear ambitions can realistically be done only by staying on good terms with Iran, not by hostile pressure or threats.

The risk for the world powers involved is that they may be seen to make more and more concessions to Iran in the hope of fruitful talks, but fail to get a verifiable end to Iran's work on technologies that could lead to nuclear weapons.

In that case, the attempt to forge a common front to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons power might be lost.
news article

imo this has dissolved the preasure that the west was putting on Iran.

Russia has signed a deal in Moscow to launch Iran's nuclear reactor at Bushehr in September next year, officials in Moscow say.

They say the Russian-built reactor will be fully operational in November 2007.

Iran had feared Russia would delay the launch because of international tension over Iran's nuclear activities, correspondents say.

it says it all.

This should come as no surprise because France has long been pretty lax on a great many issues concerning the ME.

And people want france to monitor Iran? That's a friggin' joke.

Anyone monitoring Iran would be a joke!! Why well I predict the following. Iran is allowed to develop it's Nuclear power under monitoring. Then once they have it they decide to kick all the monitors out, then whilst the UN pussyfoots around deciding what to do, Iran gets it's nuke.

Sounds similar to some of the more recent exhibitions we've seen lately doesn't it.

France is having its own problems with muslims.....Again...

Muslims are waging civil war against us, claims police union
By David Rennie, Europe Correspondent
(Filed: 05/10/2006)

Radical Muslims in France's housing estates are waging an undeclared "intifada" against the police, with violent clashes injuring an average of 14 officers each day.

Interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy was warned of an 'intifada'

As the interior ministry said that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year, a police union declared that its members were "in a state of civil war" with Muslims in the most depressed "banlieue" estates which are heavily populated by unemployed youths of north African origin.

Perhaps they're just trying to find a solution to the problem while keeping their interests in mind...

"Their" interest? Radical Islamofacist young Muslims are soon going to control France. That's their goal as it ultimately is for every country on earth. They chose France because frankly they knew how limp wristed the Government/police/military there are. Let's see what France looks like in a year. There will be thousand of insane Muslim men roaming the streets of Paris murdering every 'nonbeleiver' they can find and guess what? You won't see ANY US or UN forces lifting a finger to help.
The French Government has played the 'be nice to the Islamofacists and they will leave us alone' card and look what it's got them throughout their history. That's right the same as it has always got them----nothing but dead Frenchmen. The country who wanted to appease the Islamofacists the most now has them roaming the streets in their hundreds (soon to be thousands) essentially at war with first the police and soon the military. France can not stop the Islamofacists. There are thousands of them in every country in Europe and when let lose on Irans orders will swarm into France. That will be the end of Europe because when they have gained control in France they will do what the Nazis did and keep invading other countries. At some point they will have to stopped and that will mean the end of the world as we know it.
As the Islamofacists grow bolder and more violent (if that's possible) the tourist dollars France depends on will dry up. Paris at night will look like a ghost town. Everywhere the Islamofacists are will NOT be where the tourists are. Of that there can be no debate.

Don't be selective with your histroy. France also thought about coming to the aid of the South if they had won, without debate, the battle of Gettysburg. SO did England.

I don't care who threw the first insult. You can't use one part of history just because it suits you better.

A little cocky are we? The fact that France didn't dominate at anything post WWII leads me to believe that you don't know as much as you say.

I posted this in P&G, but I'll reiterate my kudos to Mr. Chirac for his moral and moderate stance.
