A new, $4.7 million cemetery in Nottingham is the first public graveyard in the UK to have all its burial plots aligned with Mecca and to inter those of all faiths in the Muslim tradition.

All headstones at the 40-acre burial site will face northeast, enabling the dead to look over their shoulder toward Mecca, the manner prescribed for followers of Islam in the UK.

Church leaders have criticized the decision by local officials, saying that imposing a Muslim model on Christians, who traditionally are buried facing east, is discriminatory.

"This is a sensitive issue to all people. I hope the situation will be reviewed with wide consultation and a policy introduced that takes account of the needs of all," the Rt. Rev. George Cassidy, bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, told the London Daily Mail.

Just goes to show that the multi-cultis are as much an enemy to Western Civlization as Al Qaida.

We all know about their "anti-war" movement. They support Hezboullah in the recent fighting in Lebanon, they undermine the US lead war on Islamic terrorism, they also support Islamic immigration (colonization) of Western nations.

The multi-cultis would throw open the gates of Vienna to the Ottoman Turks if they could travel back to the year 1529.

It's more to do with families of the dead which affects how we treat the bodies and the place of internment - otherwise we'd be dumping bodies in a landfill with old empty tins and newspapers wouldn't we?

This is a silly decision by well-meaning fools on the local council; it's clear that local Muslims are equally appalled and bemused by it.

Personally I really don't care which way my old body faces when I meet the Grim Reaper. But some people, some Christians, will have a problem. This graveyard is a municipal property and should, IMO, reflect the wishes of all of its 'occupants'. So, a section for Muslims whose families wish them to face Mecca and a section for Christians to face the direction their families wish them to face. Interestingly, other local authorities that border Nottingham City Council follow that policy.

if its a public cemetary, you should be able to get buried in any position

It is another example of an issue that has been taken to an absolute. If any group has to be buried in a specific manner then they had better buy themselves the appropriate amount of land to satisfy their personal religious agendas.

In a public cemetary some uniformity in the plotting of the stones is probably a good idea, but it would be best to pick a direction that has nothing to do with any religious group.

If Christians or Muslims require a specific direction then the public cemetary is not for them.

It is blasphemy to have Christian graves pointed towards Mecca. Islam worships a false prophet and a false god.

I'm Christian, and I don't see how it's blasphemy. Now, I could see if they required a crescent (or whatever) on the headstone, that it would be blasphemy, but otherwise?
