I am currently in the begining stages of forming a sort-of internet based pressure group for the UK - the new whigs - in partnership with thefranzkafrafront. An FAQ, and a brief outline of the kind of beliefs we would like to advance, are avaliable on the website

If you can, please give it a read, and if you like the general jist of our direction, feel free to sign the guestbook in support. All we want at this stage is a general feeling through feedback that we aren't pissing in the wind on this one.

thanks

It looks good, but I would change the name if you plan on taking this further, as most people would probably disregard you as eccentric just because of the name. Also, im not to keen on total aboltion of the monarchy, coudn't you just keep them as a figurehead and for ceromonial purposes? The majority of the British people are quite fond of them, as are a few million tourists.

well yeh, at this stages we are testing the waters. if abolition of monarchy is a barrier to a lot of people supporting us where they would otherwise, then we will almost certainly go back and remove that reference

Its a slight deterrant to me, but I could overcome it. How far do you plan on taking this? Are you going to keep it as a freewebs sight with a max of a few hundred visitors a week or do you see it growing into an actual organisation? If you need any help, I would be more than willing to, although I advise you to not let me write anything, as you and franzkafka are far more elloquent than I.

Quote: Fourthly, very much in keeping with older Whig thinking, is a rejection of tradition when it cannot objectively be seen to serve purpose. We advocate the abolition of monarchy, hereditary positions in government, and the link between church and state - all subject to nationwide referendum. We are also much interested in the possibility of a codified constitution and bill of rights for the UK.

I actually like having the Monarchy, as I seem the alternatives as being worse. However, separation of church and state - good (although you have to ask how much the Church influences UK politics).

Also, what benefits would a constitution bring? If it results in people ranting on and on about their constitutional rights all the time, I'd have to say no...

Anyways, good luck guys! It's good to see you trying to make change, instead of just ranting on and on like me! :-D

Well i salute your enthusiasm. But unless you remove the franchise from anyone without a certain IQ i just dont see it could work...

Freedom is good. But people are stupid and sometimes i think its better to steer them then let them wander in the dark.

But i am a Liberal... Socialist so its not going to surprise you!lol

I don't agree with the abolition of the monarchy either mainly because the alternatives seem worse and they make money for Britain. Generally speaking I agree with the principles. There are a few I agree and disagree with.
